Around the MIAA

Adrian (9-15, 2-6)

The Adrian College volleyball team played two matches last week, dropping them both. The Bulldogs fell to Hope in three sets on Wednesday, and then to Kalamazoo 3-1 on Saturday. Adrian was still able to get into the MIAA Tournament as the #6 seed after winning a three-way tiebreaker with Olivet and Saint Mary’s based off of the percentage of sets won head-to-head with those schools. The Bulldogs travel to Alma for a first round matchup with the Scots on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Albion (16-11, 5-3)

Setter Grace VanDorn (North Aurora, Ill.) finished her 36th career double-double with 44 assists and 18 digs and RS Kate Winter (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) collected a season-high 16 kills against Trine last Wednesday…Winter’s 16 kills were one shy of her career-high, set in a five-set victory over Trine last season.

Alma (18-7, 6-2)

Alma heads into the MIAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed after going 6-2 this season in conference. The Scots finished up the regular season this week with losses to Div. II Northwood Wednesday and No. 1 Calvin Saturday. Freshman middle blocker Bre DeLoye (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) set a career-high for kills in the match against Northwood and then topped that with five kills against the Knights.

No. 1 Calvin (26-1, 8-0)

No report submitted.

No. 14 Hope (24-6, 7-1)

The Hope College volleyball team went 2-1 on the week and clinched the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament. The Flying Dutch won at Adrian College in three sets on Wednesday, October 24 and beat Olivet College in three sets at home on Saturday, October 27 on Senior Day. Against Adrian, freshman middle hitter McKenna Otto (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) led Hope with 10 kills and a .643 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Emma DuMez (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) recorded a team-high eight kills against Olivet. On Friday, the Flying Dutch lost to Calvin at home in three sets in a match that didn’t count toward the league standings.

Kalamazoo (5-23, 1-7)

The Kalamazoo College volleyball team won its first conference match this week over Adrian and ended the week with a 1-1 record. In Coach Jeanne Hess' final game of her 35-year career, the Hornets pulled out a four-set win over the Bulldogs. Sophomore Madi Goodman led the way for Kalamazoo this week as her 30 kill week earned her MIAA Player of the Week recognition. Senior Rachel Girard played fantastically in Kalamazoo's win. Her 14 kills and 21 digs provided the spark the Hornets needed on both sides of the ball to win the match.

Olivet (14-15, 2-6)

The Olivet College volleyball team suffered a pair of three-set losses last week to No. 1 Calvin College and No. 15 Hope College. In the loss to Calvin, junior Gabrielle Mundt became the third player in school history to surpass the 1,000 career dig plateau. Brittney Prince broke Olivet's single-season record with a .316 attack percentage. As a team, the Comets had a 14-15 record in 2018. The 14 wins matches the 2015 team for the second-most wins in school history for a season.

Saint Mary's (12-18, 2-6)

The Belles concluded the 2018 season with a 1-1 mark in league play last week. Alyssa Chong tied for match-high honors with 15 kills while tallying a .464 attack percentage in a 3-1 win over Kalamazoo. Nicole Lukens led Saint Mary's with eight kills and a match-high 22 digs in a 3-0 loss at Trine on Saturday. Morgan VanderWey eclipsed the 2,000 assist plateau for her career with 25 helpers at Trine.
