Around the MIAA
Adrian (9-12, 2-3)
The Adrian College volleyball team had a tough week, dropping three matches all by a score of 3-1. The Bulldogs fell in conference play at home to Alma on Wednesday before losing a pair of matches on Saturday to John Carroll and Oberlin as part of the Oberlin Quad.
Albion (12-10, 3-3)
Libero Monica Shuk reached the milestone of 2,000 career digs last Saturday...Middle blocker Taylor Rosenthal is six kills shy of becoming the third Briton to reach 1,000 in a career.
Alma (17-2, 5-1)
The volleyball team is in the midst of their longest win streak (seven) of the season after adding three more this week. The Scots went down to Adrian and beat the Bulldogs, 3-1, Wednesday (Oct. 10). Freshman outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) had a career-high 21 kills and junior outside hitter Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky./Scott County) recorded a career-high 27 digs in the match. Alma followed it up Saturday (Oct. 13) with a pair of sweeps over Anderson University (Ind.) and Franklin College (Ind.). Haley Novak (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) gathered a combined 119 assists on the week. The sophomore ranks third in the conference with 630 helpers.
No. 1 Calvin (19-1, 5-0)
Calvin was in action for five matches last week. The Knights opened with a five-set conference win at Saint Mary's on Wednesday as junior Sarah DeVries notched her third triple-double of the season. Calvin then hosted the Midwest Invitational over the weekend. On Friday, Calvin swept Susquehanna before topping 19th-ranked Ohio Northern in four sets. On Saturday Calvin swept Elmhurst but then dropped its first match of the season, falling to seventh-ranked Thomas More in a five-set thriller. At the conclusion of the tournament, freshman Kelsey Smith was named to the Midwest Invitational All-Tournament team. Calvin will host Adrian Tuesday night and then journey to the western suburbs of Chicago this weekend to participate in the Elmhurst Invitational. While there the Knights will face UW-Whitewater, Aurora and Carthage.
No. 13 Hope (20-4, 4-1)
The Hope College volleyball team went 4-0 last week by defeating Albion at home and winning three times at the Midwest Invitational. The Flying Dutch avenged two losses to nationally ranked opponents at the Midwest Invitational by downing No. 7 Thomas More in four sets and No. 19 Ohio Northern in five sets. Against Ohio Northern, senior Grace Ditzenberger of Centennial, Colorado (Chaparral HS) set a Hope College record with 12 total blocks.
Kalamazoo (4-19, 0-5)
The Kalamazoo College volleyball team ended a five match week with a 1-4 record. The Hornets found themselves on the winning end of their match with North Park while dropping matches against Trine, Dubuque, Dominican, and Illinois Tech. In Kalamazoo’s victory over North Park, it received double digit kills from Madi Goodman (15), Rachel Girard (14), and Shelby Suseland (10). Setter Zoey Ammon contributed 40 assists in the match while adding seven digs. The defense was led by Maddie Wojcik’s 20 digs and added double digit digs from Sophie Woodhams (13) and Kelly Nickelson (11).
Olivet (12-10, 2-3)
Did not compete. Will travel to play Alma College on Tuesday night before co-hosting a tournament with Albion College on Friday and Saturday. The Comets will face UW-Eau Claire and Denison (Ohio) on Friday and UW-Platteville and Finlandia on Saturday.
Saint Mary's (10-14, 1-4)
The Belles took No. 1 Calvin to the brink in a 3-2 setback at home on Wednesday before falling to both Mount St. Joseph and Earlham on Friday. Nicole Lukens had double-doubles in all three matches while Audrey Shannon posted 80 digs (6.15 d/s). Morgan VanderWey amassed 108 assists for the Belles.
Trine (9-10, 2-4)
Senior Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) led the way as the Trine University women's volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to win 3-2 over Kalamazoo College.
