KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Senior Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) led the way as the Trine University women's volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to win 3-2 over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opponent Kalamazoo College.
Scott finished the contest with a team-high 16 kills with an impressive .342 hitting percentage. She also added two blocks on the night to account for 17.5 points.
The Thunder struggled to start the contest, dropping the first two sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-18.
In the third set Trine started to find their rhythm building an early 7-4 lead behind the serving of sophomore libero Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven / New Haven), who would finish the night with two aces. The team held off the surging Hornets but found themselves tied four times in the set before taking the lead for the final time. Kalamazoo would hang around but the Thunder took the set 25-22.
The Trine offense really got rolling in the fourth set as they scored nine straight points to build the early 12-4 lead. They would hold at least a five-point lead for the remainder of the set winning comfortably by the score of 25-16 to pull even at two sets apiece.
The Thunder continued their offensive roll winning the first four points of the decisive set and taking an 8-4 lead as the teams switched ends. The scrappy Hornets didn't go away easy however scoring five of the next six points to tie the set at 9-9. Senior Morgan Harris (Crown Point / Merrillville) ended the oppositions run with a crucial kill starting a six-point run for Trine. The Thunder would win the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Coming in behind Scott offensively were sophomores Madison Munger (Indianapolis / Franklin Central) with 12 kills and Sarah Toles (Kendallville / East Noble) with 11. Toles led Thunder attackers with a .474 hitting percentage and also added two blocks.
Junior Molly Smith (Angola / Angola) turned in a strong performance off the bench finishing the night with seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
In addition to her kill at the turning point of the fifth set, Harris anchored the block for the team finishing with three blocks, including a crucial solo block during the final run of the fifth set.
Senior Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich. / Airport) led the way with 25 assists and 20 digs in the contest. DeCamp and freshman Kendra Nicley (Lebanon / Western Boone) also made heavy contributions to the defensive effort with 17 digs apiece.
The Thunder improve to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. They will take a break from conference play when they travel to face Manchester on Saturday, Oct. 20. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
