Around the MIAA
Adrian (9-9, 2-2)
The Adrian College volleyball had a tough week last week, falling to Saint Mary’s 3-1 in non-conference action on Friday before dropping another 3-1 game to Olivet on Saturday. Sophomore Alex Tobler led the offensive with 35 kills over the two games, while fellow sophomore Liz Susitko compiled 70 assists on the weekend. Senior Olivia Welch led the defensive effort with 52 digs. The Bulldogs host Alma on Wednesday before traveling to Oberlin, Ohio on the weekend for a double-header with John Carroll and Oberlin.
Albion (10-7, 3-2)
Middle blocker Taylor Rosenthal (Vicksburg, Mich.) hit .444 (28-4-54) in two matches against MIAA rivals last week...Middle blocker Marie Pregenzer (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) hit .400 (24-4-50) with six blocks and five aces.
Alma (14-2, 4-1)
The volleyball team earned two wins in two different ways last week. It beat Albion 3-2 in its first five-set match of the season. Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) posted career-highs in kills (19) and digs (28) in the match. It came back to sweep Saint Mary's on Saturday (Oct. 6), where Haley Novak (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) had 41 assists and nine kills on a 56.2 hitting percentage. The Scots are in second place in the MIAA behind No. 1 Calvin more than halfway through the conference season.
No. 1 Calvin (15-0, 4-0)
Calvin defeated Trine on Oct. 2, 3-1. Anna Kamp led the Knights offense with 24 kills, and a .467 hitting percentage. Sarah DeVries had 33 assists 20 kills. Grace Kellogg and Keilahna Castillo finished with 14 and 13 digs, respectively. The Knights defeated Alma Oct. 5, 3-0; Kamp had 15 kills, eight digs, two aces and a .538 hitting percentage. Sarah DeVries had 12 kills, 23 assists, four block assists, two aces and a hitting percentage of .400. For her efforts on the week, Kamp earned MIAA Player of the Week honors.
No. 16 Hope (16-4, 3-1)
The Hope College volleyball team went 4-0 on the week — beating Kalamazoo, Trine, Rose-Hulman, and Bluffton all on the road. Freshman middle hitter McKenna Otto of Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton North HS) recorded a collegiate-high 19 kills against Rose-Hulman. The Flying Dutch matched a season-high with 14 service aces as Hope upped its record to 16-4 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play.
Kalamazoo (3-15, 0-4)
The Kalamazoo College volleyball team finished the week with an 0-3 record. The Hornets hosted Hope (5-25, 24-26, 9-25) before heading to Franklin University over the weekend to play matches against Earlham (25-22, 19-25, 14-25, 21-25) and Franklin (22-25, 22-25, 22-25). Madi Goodman led the Hornets over the weekend with 26 kills over two matches. Rachel Girard added 16 kills and 28 digs for the Hornets against Earlham and Franklin. Kalamazoo returns to action at home against Trine on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
Olivet (12-10, 2-3)
The Olivet College volleyball team split its two MIAA matches last week, losing in three sets to Saint Mary's before rebounding to beat Adrian in four sets. Against Saint Mary's, Brittney Prince tallied 13 kills. Madelyn Notenbaum finished with 26 set assists and 16 digs. Against Adrian, Prince led all players with 24 kills, Notenbaum dished out 35 set assists and Drue Mullin had 27 digs.
Saint Mary's (10-11, 1-3)
The Belles posted a 2-1 record on the week with a 1-1 mark in MIAA play. Nicole Lukens set a new MIAA record for kills in a three-set match with 25 while adding 22 digs to lead all players in both categories in the Belles' sweep of Olivet. Saint Mary's picked up a 3-1 non-conference win over Adrian on Friday as Lukens picked up another double-double with 20 kills and better than 20 digs.
Trine (8-10, 1-4)
Trine finished the week with two hard fought losses against nationally-ranked teams, taking a set from both of them. In the match against Calvin, the Thunder finished with a season high .305 team hitting percentage. It is only the second set Trine has taken from Calvin in the last four years and just the ninth the Knights have lost all year.
