Calvin Regains MIAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship

With Calvin and Hope tied at 813 points heading into the final event of the 2020 MIAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday, it was a gutsy final swim by Calvin's Hannah Chao, Hannah Brown, Valerie Edewaard, and Emily Gunderson to lift the Knights to the 2020 title.

With the A final win, coupled with points from a second-place finish in the B final in the 400 free relay, Calvin outscored Hope 867-857 as both teams held off a strong Albion squad that posted 819 points for third.

Calvin only tallied one individual win on Saturday - Chao's NCAA B cut effort in the 200 back (2:03.05), but the Knights scored well throughout the final day for the difference.

Both Hope's Emma Schaefer and Albion's Rileigh Eding posted their third MIAA titles in as many days. Schaefer's win in the 200 breast (2:20.78) marked the third NCAA B cut of the MIAA Championship. Eding touched first in the 100 free in 51.81.

Other individual winners on Saturday were Hope's Emma Engle in the 1650 free, and Albion's Samantha Swingewood in the 200 fly. It was the second MIAA title of the championship for Swingewood.

Earning superlative honors were Hope's Emma Schaefer as Most Valuable Swimmer, and Hannabeth Magnussen of Calvin as Most Valuable Diver.

Men's Recap

Albion successfully defended their MIAA title with depth in the 200 back, a 1-2-3 podium in the 200 fly, and a 1-2 finish in the 200 breaststroke as the Britons won the 2020 MIAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship, hosted by Calvin University at Venema Aquatic Center.

Albion won three individual titles on Saturday, aiding in the Brits scoring 933.5 points to cruise past Calvin (838 points) and Hope (693 points).

Connor Robertson headlined a 1-3-4-5 finish for the Britons in the 200 back with an NCAA B cut time of 1:49.82.

In the 200 fly, Gerardo Huidobro touched first for Albion in 1:53.14, while teammates Drew Fogel (1:53.28) and Nate Cobb (1:53.93) rounded out the top three.

Albion's Tyler Kimbrell followed up a four-peat in the 100 breast on Friday with a fourth consecutive MIAA title in the 200 breast with a time of 2:02.75 for an NCAA B cut. Kimbrell and teammate Jake Huttenlocher pushed each other through the race, with Huttenlocher also turning in a NCAA B cut in 2:02.92.

Also earning individual wins on Saturday were Hope's Bailey Smith in the 1650 free, Calvin's Julian Iturbe in the 100 free, and Kameron Wilcox on the 3-meter board.
