Around the MIAA
Adrian (19-19, 7-9)
The Adrian College softball team ended its season last week with a trio of doubleheaders, picking up two wins in the six games. The week started with a split against Albion on Wednesday, with the Bulldogs winning game one, 23-0. It was the fourth-most runs scored in program history and the fourth-largest margin of victory. AC was swept by No. 24 Thomas More on Thursday before splitting with St. Mary’s to end the season on Saturday. The three seniors had memorable days on senior day, with Natalia Younan picking up a career-high five RBIs in her final game. Paige Cubberly pitched game one and gave up three runs on seven hits in the loss in her last game in the circle and Krista Lynch was hit by a pitch in game one, giving her the program record for most times being hit by a pitch in a season with 11 this year.
Albion (8-32, 1-15)
Alma (20-16, 7-9)
The Scots ended their season going 5-1 in their final week. Senior McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) hit her tenth home run of the year against Olivet, tying her for the most in a single season in Alma history and giving her 19 in her career, the second-most of any Alma player. Freshman Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) hit three home runs in game two versus the Comets, the first time that feat has ever been accomplished in by a Scot. As a team, Alma had the highest batting average (.357) and slugging percentage (.537) and the second-highest on-base percentage (.421) of any team in program history. Alma also hit 79 doubles, more than any other year. 27 home runs, third on the program's all-time list.
Calvin (26-8, 12-4)
Calvin went 4-2 in conference play last week, dropping both ends of a doubleheader with Trine on Monday before coming back to sweep twinbills from Kalamazoo (Wednesday) and Olivet (Friday). The Knights (26-8 overall) finished second in the final MIAA regular season standings with a 12-4 conference record and will be the No. 2 seed for the MIAA Tournament this week. Calvin also cracked the NCAA III Central Region rankings last week, moving into the No. 9 spot. Sophomore catcher Grace Stock had a big final week at the plate for the Knights to finish second in the final MIAA batting race with a .476 average. Sophomore Ellie Borst picked up a pair of victories during the week to bump her season win total to 12.
Hope (23-11, 10-6)
The Hope College softball team swept Kalamazoo College. 13-9 and 17-3, on Senior Day to secure a third-place in the MIAA regular-season standings. The Flying Dutch (23-9 overall) rebounded after losing twice to Trine and splitting with Saint Mary's earlier in the week. Against Kalamazoo, sophomore shortstop Savannah Dixon of Niles, Michigan (Edwardsburg) recorded five doubles over two games, including a school record-tying three during Game 2.
Kalamazoo (13-22, 4-12)
The Hornets finished the 2019 season by splitting games with Elmhurst on Sunday. Seniors Andrea MacMichael (43), Ashley Schiffer (37), and Hayleigh Alamo (34) were tops on the team in hits. MacMichael's 17 stolen bases placed her first in the MIAA at the end of the regular season. Alamo broke the school record with four home runs this season while finishing in seventh place in the MIAA with 32 RBIs. Keelin McManus tied the previous school home runs record with three.
Olivet (19-17, 8-8)
The Olivet College softball team lost all four games it played last week -- a doubleheader at MIAA rival Calvin and a non-conference doubleheader at Roosevelt (Ill.) University. Despite the losses to Calvin, senior Kinslea Blouin became the third player in school history to be the MIAA batting champion with a .478 average. She finished the year ranked among the single-season Olivet leaders in several other statistical categories. Blouin also finished her as the Comets' all-time leader in home runs and slugging percentage. Olivet ended the 2019 season with a 19-17 overall record.
Saint Mary's (13-22, 9-7)
The Belles split doubleheaders against Alma, Hope, and Adrian to secure the fourth spot in the MIAA Tournament with a 9-7 league record. Kelsey Keilman hit .524 on the week with seven runs to help lead the team to their fifth consecutive MIAA Tournament appearance. Mandi Hettinger hit .450 with a team-high six RBI while going 2-1 in the circle with wins over Alma and Hope. Zoe Bruni picked up the complete-game win in the circle against Adrian in what proved to be the win to clinch the final spot in the league tournament.
