Calvin, Saint Mary's win on Day One of MIAA Softball Tournament

Calvin 8, Hope 2

Calvin broke out early, plating three runs in the first and five in the second inning to advance past Hope Friday afternoon, 8-2, and anvance to Saturday.

The Knights (27-8) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run home run from Abi Colon. In the second inning, Calvin added five runs to take an 8-0 lead. Colon

Hope (23-12) tallied single runs in the fourth and seventh; Calvin's Ellie Borst went the distance for the win in the circle, striking out eight while scattering nine hits.


Saint Mary's 5, Trine 4

Tied at 3 going into the seventh inning, Saint Mary's (14-22) Megan Knudsen hit a two-run single in the top of the inning to lift the Belles to a 5-4 win over top-seeded Trine Friday afternoon.

Trine's Makenna Hartline responded in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff home run, but the Thunder (30-5) could not plate another run. Saint Mary's Mandi Hettinger registered the win.

Saint Mary's Krystal Harris had a key triple and went 2-for-3 for the game with one run scored and one RBI. JoAnna Keilman and Sydney Swartz also had two-hit efforts for the Belles. Trine's Claire Ryan led all hitters with a 3-for-3 effort.


Trine 4, Hope 4 (through 8 complete innings)

Trailing 4-2 into the bottom of the seventh inning, Hope scored two runs to force extra innings against host Trine. With darkness looming, the two teams were only able to get in one additional inning before the game was suspended. Both teams will take the field Saturday at 11:15 a.m. to resume the MIAA Tournament.
