Around the MIAA
Adrian (11-6-2, 3-3-1)
Adrian tied Albion, 1-1, in the MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament First Round Nov. 2. Albion then advanced past the Bulldogs with a 4-1 result on penalty kicks.
Albion (7-9-2, 2-5-0)
Albion converted all four of its attempts in a shootout to decide whether it or Adrian would advance in the MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Joan Tomas, Micah Cross, Stefan Isaevski, and Carter Peek came through as Albion edged Adrian in the shootout, 4-1, to advance to a Wednesday night semifinal match at Calvin. Albion and Adrian played to a 1-1 draw for 110 minutes. Dakota Clapper scored the equalizer for Albion in the 17th minute. While he did not score, Joan Tomas generated two shots on goal to finish as Albion's top offensive threat. Albion goalkeeper Maximilian Loria made six saves.
Alma (5-11-0, 2-5-0)
Alma fell in its season finale on Wednesday (Oct. 30), 3-0 to Trine. Brian Ganton (Williamston, Mich.) had a team-high six shots for the Scots (5-11, 2-5), two of which were on goal. Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich.) made nine saves in the game for the fourth time this season. The Scots finish the season 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA.
No. 2/2 Calvin (18-1-0, 7-0-0)
Calvin clinched an outright MIAA regular season title with a 2-0 win over Albion last Wednesday. Senior Dillon Weldy scored a goal 2:14 into the match on an assist from senior Ian Adams. The assist by Adams was the 45th of his collegiate career, matching a Calvin career record. The Knights picked up the clinching goal with 4:46 left in regulation as Sam Twigg popped in his 11th goal of the season. At 18-1-0 overall, the Knights are the top seed for the MIAA Tournament and will host Albion in an MIAA Tournament semifinal match Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Hope (13-5-0, 6-1-0)
Hope's Logan Bylsma deflected a 20-yard pass from teammate Alec Belcastro into the net for the lone goal in a 1-0 victory at Adrian Wednesday. The Flying Dutchmen finished the regular season with a 13-5 overall record and a second-place 6-1 mark against MIAA opponents. Hope advanced to the MIAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Flying Dutchmen earned a first-round bye and will host a Wednesday, November 6 semifinal against Kalamazoo...Against Adrian, The Flying Dutchmen posted their 10th shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Blair McCormick (Wadsworth, Ill.) made five saves.
RV/NR Kalamazoo (11-3-2, 4-2-1)
Kalamazoo moved on in the MIAA Tournament following a 3-1 first-round victory over Trine. Nick Kraeuter got Kalamazoo on the board with a penalty kick 31 minutes into the match. Emilio Romo and Ben Meschke each added goals of their own in the second half to seal Kalamazoo's win. Luke Kastran made two saves for the Hornets while playing all 90 minutes in goal. Kalamazoo now heads to Hope on Wednesday evening for an MIAA Tournament semifinal match up.
