Among the highlights from the 2017 season:

- Trine posted a 10-0 regular season record, including a 6-0 mark against MIAA opponents, to capture the 2017 MIAA Championship. It was the first MIAA title for the Thunder since 2010.

- In the 2017 NCAA Football Championship, Trine defeated Monmouth (Ill.) in the First Round, 63-24. The Thunder were then bumped from the postseason after a 49-7 setback to Wartburg.

- Prior to the start of the year, the MIAA announced that Finlandia would join the conference as an affiliate member for football starting with the 2018 season.
