Junior swimmer Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) and the No. 18 Calvin women's swimming and diving team came out victorious in a dual meet over Grove City College on Friday and competed in a quad meet of nationally-ranked Division III opponents at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. On Friday, Sonday finished 2nd in both of her individual events in the 100 butterfly at 1:01.16 and the 100 breaststroke at 1:13.25. Sonday also placed 3rd in both of her relay events, with a split of 26.08 in the 200 medley relay, and led off the 200 freestyle relay with a split of 27.99. On Saturday, against the strongest Division III competition of the year, Sonday won the 100 freestyle, setting a pool record with a time of 52.10, and swam a dual meet best in the 200 freestyle at 1:56.97. Sonday also anchored the 3rd-placing 200 medley relay in 23.29 and placed second in the 200 freestyle relay with a split of 23.33, which helped the freestyle relay team post a time under the NCAA qualifying time.
