Around the MIAA
Adrian
Adrian placed eighth at the MIAA Women's Cross Country Championships Nov. 2, scoring 239 points as a team.
Albion
An Albion College lineup with three first-year runners and two sophomores finished seventh in the MIAA Women's Cross Country Championship at the Zollner Golf Course. Kenna Childress, a first-year runner from Berkley, Mich., was Albion's top runner. She finished 36th overall, completing the 6K course in 25:37.9. Another first-year runner, Samantha Bieth, was Albion's next runner at 27:45.4.
Alma
Alma competed in the MIAA Championship Saturday (Nov. 2), placing sixth. Senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich.) was selected to the Women's Cross Country All-MIAA Second Team. Freshman Cornelia Gotaas (Alma, Mich.) followed Hemstreet with a time of 36:59.3 and placing 32nd.
Calvin
Calvin took third at the MIAA Championships on Saturday with a team score of 54 points. Senior Michelle Koetje was the top finisher for Calvin, placing third individually to earn a spot on the All-MIAA First Team. Sophomore Annie Needs was ninth and senior Emma Schroer 10th to lead Calvin's top group. Koetje earned a spot on the All-MIAA First Team for her third place run. Calvin will now prepare to host the Great Lakes Regional Championships November 16 at its own Gainey Athletic Complex.
No. 17 Hope
Neither illness nor the competition could not deter Hope from a fifth consecutive MIAA championship. Without two of their top five runners, the 25th-ranked Flying Dutch still repeated as league champs on Saturday at Trine University by posting a winning score in the nine-team event of 32 points. Hope clocked seven of the fastest 19 times. Four of the runs resulted All-MIAA First Team honors. Freshman Ana Tucker (Midland, Mich.) placed second with a run of 23:19.1. Senior Anna Frazee (Watervliet, Mich.) took fourth by clocking a time of 23:36.4. It was Frazee's second All-MIAA award. Senior Chelsea Miskelley (Holland, Mich.) recorded a seventh-place effort of 23:46.8. Junior Jacinda Cole (Holland, Mich.) finished eighth with a time of 23:57.9.
Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo placed fifth at the MIAA Championships at Trine University on Saturday. Rachael Gallap paced Kalamazoo with a 16th place finish as the junior crossed at 24:32 to earn All-MIAA Second Team honors. Freshman Anna Varitek ran a 24:49 and finished 21st overall. She was the third-fastest freshman in the field. Gwendolyn Flatland placed 38th with a time of 27:41. Rachel Cornell and Kathryn LeVasseur rounded out the five Hornets with 40th and 41st place finishes.
Olivet
Olivet placed ninth at the MIAA Cross Country Championships, scoring 250 points as a team.
Saint Mary's
The Belles saw their top five runners finish within 11 scoring places of one another as Saint Mary's took fourth place at the MIAA Championship. Julia O'Grady led the Belles with a 24:34.1 for 17th place overall. O'Grady was the third-highest finisher among freshmen runners in the race. Katie Glenn powered past a runner from Hope to take 18th place with a 24:36.9. Addie Bobosky, Angela Bannan, and Bridget Kenney rounded out the top five for the Belles.
Trine
Trine was the runner up at the 2019 MIAA Women's Cross Country Championships, led by a first-place finish by Evie Bultemeyer. Bultemeyer finished the 6K event in 22:34.9 to win by 45 seconds on second-place finisher Ana Tucker of Hope.
