All-MIAA - Volleyball - 2021

FREELAND, Mich. -- Head coaches from the nine Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's (MIAA) member institutions that sponsor volleyball voted on All-MIAA awards following the conclusion of the 2021 regular season.

Hope senior setter Tracy Westra was selected the MIAA Most Valuable Player and earned her second career All-MIAA honors.  Other superlative award winners include sophomore Maggie Wehrmeyer of Hope who was voted the Defensive Player of the Year, Calvin's Vanessa Martinez as Freshman of the Year, and Albion's Grace VanDorn who earned the first Senior Impact Award.

Tracy Westra, the 2021 MVP, assisted the Flying Dutch to their 14th MIAA Championship title.  Westra concluded league play as the leader in assists (318) and assists per set (11.36).  She was named MIAA Volleyball Specialty Player of the Week twice this season.

Defensive Player of the Year, libero Maggie Wehrmeyer, also helped Hope to a perfect conference record and the regular-season crown.  She finished MIAA play as the leader in digs per set with an average of 5.72.  Wehrmeyer was previously voted the Freshman Player of the Year in the spring of 2021.

Calvin middle hitter Vanessa Martinez assisted the Knights to a 7-1 conference record on her way to garnering the Freshman of the Year accolade.  Martinez concluded the regular season with a .306 hitting percentage, 14 blocks, and 0.58 blocks per set in starting six of the eight matches that she competed in.

Fifth-year senior setter Grace VanDorn is the second-ever recipient of the Senior Impact Award.  In her career, VanDorn has been a part of every leadership group the team has had.  She is also a part of Albion's acapella singing group and was a First Year Mentor in which she helped freshmen adjust to college life.  Also a mentor during COVID, VanDorn helped students struggling with mental health and adjusting to college life in an abnormal year.  Starting in January, she will be doing Teach for America, a non profit organization that looks to "enlist, develop, and mobilize as many as possible of our nation's most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence".  This year, VanDorn also took on a new role as a student representative on Albion's Diversity Equity Inclusion Committee & Pride Alliance.  She is actively working within the committee to create a sense of belonging in the team, athletic department, campus, and community.  On the court, VanDorn was able to achieve the volleyball milestones of claiming Albion's #1 spot in career assists (3,076) and reaching 3,000 assists.

Hope's McKenna Otto became a four-time All-MIAA recipient after being selected to the Second Team this season.  Calvin's Aubrey Wrubel, Hope's Ana Grunewald, and Trine's Jacqueline Baughman each became three-time All-MIAA honorees.  Albion's Chloe Webber, Calvin's Heidi Westra, and Hope's Charlotte Brecht, Wehrmeyer and Westra all garnered their second All-MIAA accolades.
