Calvin's Heidi Westra Named AVCA Player of the Year; Six MIAA Volleyball Players Deemed All-Americans

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Calvin University junior Heidi Westra was named Division III Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in addition to her First Team All-American status.  Another five volleyball players from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) were named to All-America teams, including First Team All-America honoree Tracy Westra of Hope College.

The Westra sisters represent the league on the First Team, while Hope's McKenna Otto was selected as a Second Team All-American.  Calvin's Madelyn Hall and Gabriella Kellogg, along with Hope's Maggie Wehrmeyer, were all voted to the Honorable Mention All-America Team.

Junior OH/RS player Heidi Westra became a two-time All-MIAA recipient after leading the Knights (30-3) to the MIAA Tournament crown and advancing the team to the NCAA Quarterfinals, slated for this Thursday.  Westra currently leads the league in the following categories:  kills (447), kills per set (4.03), points (536.5), points per set (4.8), and matches started (26).

Senior setter Tracy Westra was voted the 2021 MIAA Most Valuable Player after the conclusion of the regular season.  She assisted the Flying Dutch to the regular-season title, an overall record of 25-5, and the regional final of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.  Westra concluded the fall season as the conference leader in both assists (1,183) and assists per set (10.66).  She is now is a two-time All-MIAA honoree.

Hope middle blocker McKenna Otto is now a two-time AVCA Second Team All-American.  Otto became a four-time All-MIAA player in her senior year.  She finished the 2021 season second in the league with 356 kills and 436.5 points, and third with 3.9 points per set and 25 matches started.

Senior OH/RS player Madelyn Hall of Calvin was selected to the Honorable Mention All-America Team after earning a spot on the All-MIAA Second Team this season.  Hall is currently first in the conference with a .327 hitting percentage.  She is also fourth with a total of 89 blocks, and fifth in both solo blocks (17) and block assists (72).

Calvin senior Gabriella Kellogg (OH/DS) was announced as an Honorable Mention All-American.  Kellogg is currently third in the league with 3.23 kills per set.  So far, she has totaled 294 kills and 318 points, while averaging 3.5 points per set.

Honorable Mention All-American Maggie Wehrmeyer, a sophomore libero at Hope, was voted the 2021 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year after previously being selected Freshman of the Year for the spring 2021 season.  Wehrmeyer is a two-time All-MIAA selection.  She concluded the season as the conference leader in digs per set (5.59) and second with 542 digs.
