FREELAND, Mich. -- Head coaches from eight of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's (MIAA) member institutions that sponsor volleyball voted on All-MIAA awards.
Calvin sophomore Heidi Westra was selected the MIAA Most Valuable Player and earned First Team All-MIAA honors for the spring season. Other superlative award winners include two-time Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore Aubrey Wrubel of Calvin, Hope's Maggie Wehrmeyer as Freshman of the Year, and Albion's Kate Winter who earned the first Senior Impact Award.
Westra helped the Knights to a perfect 7-0 conference record this season. In league play, she leads with 18 service aces, 0.82 service aces per set, and 5.2 points per set. Westra averaged 4.09 kills per set with a total of 90 kills in MIAA competition, and concluded with a hitting percentage of 0.320.
Wrubel earned her second-straight Defensive Player of the Year accolade and was selected First Team All-MIAA. In league play, the Knight finished second behind Westra in service aces per set with 0.73 and had 4.80 digs per set with a total of 72.
Wehrmeyer assisted the Flying Dutch to a 6-1 MIAA record in her first season on the team on her way to garnering Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-MIAA accolades. The libero concluded conference competition as the leader in digs with a total of 127 and was second with 5.29 digs per set.
Winter is the first recipient of the Senior Impact Award. The award honors a senior volleyball player for GPA, service, character, and work ethic. Among some of her most notable achievements, the Briton has been named to the Dean's List (2018-2020) and the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for 2018-19 and 2019-20. Winter has served as a Winter Carnival volunteer, a SAAC clinic volunteer, and helped fundraise for the Autism Speaks philanthropy event. She was also a First-Year Student Mentor, an elementary student mentor, and a community meal-serving volunteer.
Albion's Grace VanDorn is now a four-time All-MIAA selection. Alma's Sara Majerle and Hope's McKenna Otto have both earned First Team All-MIAA honors for the third-consecutive year, while Haley Novak of Alma has also garnered All-MIAA accolades for the third-straight season.
