Around the MIAA
Adrian (5-12, 1-5)
Adrian dropped a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Calvin at home on Tuesday. Senior Korbyn Koerner led Adrian offensively with seven kills. Leading on the net was freshman Katelyn Bergman with the team's only block solo and a block assist.
Albion (15-9, 4-3)
In NCAA statistics through Oct. 24, Albion was 11th in blocks per set (2.21) and 15th in total blocks (192)…Albion has reached double digits in blocks nine times this season, including 12 against Kalamazoo last Tuesday… Kate Winter led Albion with 15 kills, Kelsey Gustafson (13 kills, 15 digs) and Grace VanDorn (26 assists, 21 digs) completed double-doubles and Jenna Khoury collected 26 digs, two shy of matching her career high at Kalamazoo.
Alma (16-11, 5-2)
Alma defeated Olivet 3-1 on Tuesday (Oct. 22) but lost matches to No. 20 Hope College and No. 1 University of Chicago. After dropping the first set 23-25 to the Comets, Alma fell behind 2-6 in set two before calling a timeout. After the timeout it was all Alma as they earned the win 25-15. Sets three and four were both close but the Scots were able to win 25-20, 25-22. Leading the Scots' offensive attack was sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.) with 17 kills and 15 digs. Fellow sophomore Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn.) had 9 kills and 10 digs. Junior Haley Novak (Midland, Mich.) had 12 digs along with 39 assists.
No. 4 Calvin (20-2, 6-0)
Calvin went 1-1 last week, defeating Adrian in three sets in a conference match on Tuesday before falling in a non-conference match to rival Hope Friday night in four sets. Senior Sarah DeVries had 12 kills and nine assists in the win over Adrian while sophomore Grace Kellogg had 10 kills and six digs. On Friday, No. 2 Calvin fell to No. 20 Hope. DeVries notched her fourth triple-double of the season in the loss with 15 kills, 21 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Smith had 14 kills. Calvin will host Olivet on Wednesday and will travel to Alma on Friday to complete its MIAA regular season.
No. 13 Hope (19-6, 5-1)
Hope posted a 3-1 record last week. On October 8, sophomore outside hitter Ana Grunewald (Grand Rapids, Mich.) racked up a season-high 23 digs along with 11 kills to during a 3-0 MIAA win at Saint Mary’s. On Friday, sophomore middle blocker McKenna Otto (Wheaton, Ill.) had a game-high 17 kills and a near-season high .552 hitting percentage in a four-set, non-conference win at Calvin. Otto also collected a match-high seven blocks. On Saturday, Otto totaled 16 kills during a four-set, non-conference win against Alma at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutch lost to No. 1 University of Chicago in four sets later on Saturday.
Kalamazoo (13-13, 0-6)
The Hornets competed in a tri-match at Wheaton College on Saturday, defeating Illinois Tech 3-0 before a 3-1 loss to Wheaton. Kalamazoo returns home to face Saint Mary's on Senior Night next Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
Olivet (14-10, 2-4)
Olivet started the week with a four-set loss at home to Alma, and ended the week by splitting two matches at the Defiance Tri-Match. At Defiance, the Comets fell to No. 23 ranked Transylvania in four sets and swept the host Yellow Jackets in three sets. The win against Defiance helped Olivet secure its first winning season since 1982. For the week, senior Morgan Champion had 35 kills, followed by junior Audrey Lama with 32, and freshman Ellie Louiselle with 29. Lama hit a team-best .218 clip. Senior Madelyn Notenbaum dished out 71 set assists. She also served four aces to move into second all-time at Olivet with 112 and needs only five to become the career leader. Senior Gabrielle Mundt and sophomore Drue Mullin each had 44 digs.
Saint Mary's (11-15, 1-5)
The Belles posted a 2-3 record on the week after facing off against four AVCA Top 25 teams in the span of five days. Among the two wins was a 3-1 victory over No. 7 ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater for the program's first win over an NCAA Top Ten team. Nicole Lukens led the team with 62 kills in the five matches. Megan Collantes was named to the all-tournament team at the Emory Invitational and tallied 61 kills on the week. Nola Wallace was a big contributor for the Belles with 19 blocks and 29 kills with a .287 attack percentage on the week. Brittney Tarkanyi picked up 80 digs, and Morgan VanderWey moved into third-place in the rally scoring era and fourth overall in career assists for the Belles.
Trine (16-11, 4-2)
The Thunder picked up a pair of wins at a tri-match hosted by Franklin College. Trine started the day with a 3-1 victory over Bluffton University before taking down host Franklin in the second contest of the day winning the match 3-1.
