Around the MIAA

Adrian (5-11, 1-4)

Adrian College fell 3-0 at Alma on Wednesday. The Bulldogs were led offensively by Madison Federmeyer with a team-best eight kills. She also had three digs, while tying for first in block assists with two.


Albion (14-9, 3-3)

Albion knocked down 11 blocks in its 25-23, 25-14, 25-11 victory over North Park University in non-league action last Friday. Albion picked up its 14th victory of the season and it is guaranteed to finish with a winning season for the fourth time in five years. First-year middle blocker Jesse Hepner finished with six kills while hitting .462 and five blocks, junior opposite side hitter Kate Winter Winter collected nine kills while hitting .280 and two blocks, senior outside hitter Kelsey Gustafson knocked down six kills to move into fifth place on Albion’s career list with 844, sophomore libero Jenna Khoury passed Haley Gitre for eighth place on Albion’s single-season digs list. Khoury collected 15 digs in the match, giving the sophomore 394 for the season. Khoury is averaging 4.7 digs per set.


Alma (15-9, 4-2)

The Alma College volleyball team went 2-1 last week with junior Haley Novak (Midland, Mich.) eclipsed 2,000 in her career. Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.) led the Scots with an average of 18 kills over the three matches. Alma defeated Adrian 3-0 on Wednesday and North Park University 3-1 on Saturday. Against North Park, Alma led 24-21 before allowing the Vikings to score the next four points to go up 25-24. After taking a timeout, the Scots forced a North Park error, got a kill from Majerle and a block from both Majerle and Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn.) to earn the win.


No. 2 Calvin (19-1, 5-0)

Calvin went 4-0 last week, defeating Saint Mary's in a conference match Wednesday and then winning all three matches at its own Midwest Invitational during the weekend. At the Midwest Invitational, Calvin swept Ithaca and Elmhurst and then came from behind to defeat No. 4 Carthage in four sets on Saturday. Sophomore Kelsey Smith had a career-high 18 kills in the win over Carthage and was named to the all-tournament team. She was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by senior Sarah DeVries.


No. 20 Hope (16-5, 4-1)

Hope won three of four matches last week: winning at Albion on October 16 and two of three matches at the Midwest Invitational hosted by Calvin University on Friday and Saturday. Sophomore outside hitter Ana Grunewald (Grand Rapids, Mich.) collected 18 kills to fuel the 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 win at Albion. On Friday, senior libero Gabbi Vachon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) set a team record with 31 digs during a 25-23, 25-17, 25-16 win against Elmhurst. With a career-high matching 31 digs, Vachon surpassed Hope’s team record for digs in a three-set match using a 25-point set. Against Ithaca, the Flying Dutch won 25-17, 25-20, 17-25, 25-19 behind 11 kills in 27 attempts from McKenna Otto (Wheaton, Ill.) and 10 kills in 42 attempts from Grunewald. On Saturday, the Flying Dutch lost to fourth-ranked Carthage 25-22, 25-21, 25-16.


Kalamazoo (12-11, 0-5)

The Hornets fell in their two matches this week as they traveled to Trine on Wednesday before hosting North Park on Friday evening. Madi Goodman led the Hornet attack with 18 kills on the week including 14 in the match against North Park. Hannah Kerns added 13 kills while Lindsey Nedd tallied 12. Grace Kraft contributed 51 assists to lead Kalamazoo. Defensively, Taylor Ferguson had 42 digs to lead the team while Ashley Rill added 21. Kalamazoo returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when it hosts Albion before heading to Wheaton (Ill.) for matched against Illinois Tech and Wheaton on Saturday.


Olivet (13-8, 2-3)

Olivet played three non-conference matches last week. The Comets began the week with a tough five-set home loss to Manchester (Ind.) University on Wednesday night. ended the week by splitting two matches Sunday at the Dominican (Ill.) University Triangular, sweeping Illinois Tech and losing in three sets to the host Stars. Against Manchester, the Comets won the first two sets before the Spartans came back to win the last three sets. Olivet totaled 49 kills, including 12 each for senior Morgan Champion and freshman Ellie Louiselle. Sophomore Drue Mullin added nine kills, while junior Audrey Lama had eight. Senior Madelyn Notenbaum dished out 44 set assists. Senior libero Gabrielle Mundt finished with a team-high 26 digs. Against Illinois Tech, Louiselle, Champion and Lama each slammed down nine kills. Junior Laken Groll was next with seven kills. Notenbaum dished out 34 set assists and served three of the 11 Olivet aces. Mullin collected 18 digs, followed by Mundt with 16. Against Dominican, Lama and Louiselle finished the match with seven kills apiece. Groll tallied four blocks (one solo and three assisted).


Saint Mary's (9-12, 1-4)

The Belles went 1-2 on the week - a 3-0 setback to league-leading Calvin, a 3-1 loss against Nebraska Wesleyan, and a 3-0 victory over North Central. Megan Collantes led the team on the week with 39 kills and hitting .290 while also picking up 28 digs. Nicole Lukens chipped in 33 kills, and Lindsey Pelletier added 21 kills with a .326 attack percentage. Morgan VanderWey had 89 assists, and Brittney Tarkanyi had a team-best 43 digs.


Trine (14-10, 4-2)

The Thunder finished the week 2-2. They started the week with another MIAA victory defeating visiting Kalamazoo College, with junior Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich.) leading the way in the match. The team then traveled to the North Central Tournament where they went 1-2 on the weekend.
