Around the MIAA

Adrian (5-10, 1-3)

After dropping a 3-0 contest at hometown and NAIA-foe Siena Heights on Thursday, the Bulldogs bounced back in fantastic fashion, claiming their first MIAA victory of the season. AC took down Olivet 3-1 at home, led offensively by Madison Federmeyer who had a team-leading 12 kills. Federmeyer also posted two block assists and two block solos.


Albion (13-8, 3-2)

Albion was ninth in Division III with 161 total blocks in NCAA statistics for matches through Oct. 10. The Britons 2.18 blocks per set ranked 11th in Division III. Kate Winter hit .290 (24-8-55) in two MIAA matches. Winter finished with 16 kills and seven block assists in the five-set loss at Alma. Jenna Khoury collected 41 digs last week, moving into ninth place on Albion's single-season list (364). Grace VanDorn completed double-doubles in both matches (33 assists, 10 digs at Alma; 22 assists, 12 digs vs. Calvin) and Kelsey Gustafson finished a double-double (11 kills, 17 digs) at Alma.


Alma (13-8, 3-2)

Alma defeated Albion 3-2 and Saint Mary's 3-0 last week. Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.) had 32 total kills and Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich.) had 11 blocks, including seven against the Britons. The Scots hit .310 against Saint Mary's for their first sweep since the first match of the season.


No. 2 Calvin (15-1, 4-0)

Calvin went 2-0 in conference play last week, topping Trine at home on Tuesday and winning at Albion on Friday. Calvin has now won 72 consecutive MIAA regular season conference matches. In a 25-12, 25-22, 25-17 victory over Trine on Tuesday, senior Sarah DeVries had 13 kills and 17 assists. Sophomore Anna Schriemer had 19 assists. Freshman Aubrey Wrubel had 26 digs. On Friday, Calvin won a hard-fought 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 decision at Albion. DeVries tallied 18 kills and a .552 hitting percentage to go with 11 assists. Schriemer had 23 assists while sophomore Grace Kellogg had 12 digs and three aces while freshman Maria Bos 11 digs. DeVries is currently ranked fourth nationally in hitting percentage (.440). As a team, Calvin is ranked third nationally in hitting percentage (.294).


No. 20 Hope (13-4, 3-1)

Hope won two MIAA matches last week. On Saturday, between outside hitter Ana Grunewald's kill total, middle hitter McKenna Otto's kill percentage, and the rest of the Flying Dutch efficient performances, everything added up to a well-rounded attack that carried the Flying Dutch to a straight-set victory over Trine, 25-16, 25-21, 25-13. Sophomore Grunewald (Grand Rapids, Mich.) amassed a team-high 14 kills for the match, while Otto (Wheaton, Ill.) added 10 on a team-high .667 hitting percentage. On Tuesday, the Flying Dutch defeated Kalamazoo, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16, as Grunewald and senior Ryann Stutz (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led Hope in kills with seven apiece while Otto added six.


Kalamazoo (12-9, 0-4)

The Hornets dropped an MIAA match at Hope on Tuesday before picking up a pair on non-conference victories over Grace Christian and Rochester over the weekend. Madi Goodman led the Hornets on the attack with 34 kills on the week including 20 in the final match. She now has 272 kills on the season which are the third most in the MIAA. Lindsey Nedd tallied 18 kills while Ashley Rill added 16. Grace Kraft collected the most assists on the week with 40 while Hannah Kerns assisted on 38 Hornet kills. Taylor Ferguson collected 34 digs for Kalamazoo; Ferguson now has 331 on the season which is third best in the league. Kalamazoo returns to MIAA play on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Trine before hosting North Park on Friday to begin the Homecoming festivities on campus.


Olivet (12-6, 2-3)

Olivet split two four-set MIAA matches last week, defeating Saint Mary's (Ind.) College at home and losing on the road at Adrian College. Against Saint Mary's, senior Morgan Champion became the Comets' all-time kills leader. Also in that match, senior Madelyn Notenbaum tallied her 100th career service ace.


Saint Mary's (8-10, 1-3)

The Belles came up short in a pair of conference matches, falling 3-1 at Olivet on Tuesday and 3-0 at home against Alma on Saturday.Nicole Lukens led all players with 22 kills at Olivet with 14 of those 22 kills coming in the third and fourth sets. Courtney Pelletier had a team-high 22 digs against the Comets. Lukens continued to put up big numbers as she had 13 kills while collecting her twelfth double-double with 14 digs against Alma. Lindsey Pelletier hit a .389 with eight kills, and Megan Collantes added seven kills and a match-high 15 digs.


Trine (12-8, 3-2)

The Thunder faced a gruelling schedule for this week facing off with Calvin and Hope both on the road. They came up short in both matches falling 3-0 both times.
