Around the MIAA

Adrian (4-9, 0-3)

Adrian continues to struggle in conference play, falling again by a 3-1 margin, this time at Saint Mary's on Tuesday. Alex Tobler led the Bulldogs in the match, posting 18 kills, 14 digs, two block assists and a service ace.


Albion (13-6, 3-0)

According to NCAA statistics through Oct. 3, Albion was 16th among Division III teams in blocks per set (2.16) and 20th in total blocks (132)…Albion won six in a row prior to its Friday loss to Wheaton (Ill.) College…Albion hit .571 (9-1-14) in the fifth set to hold off North Central (Ill.)…Setter Grace VanDorn (North Aurora, Ill.) moved into second place on Albion’s all-time assists list with 2,395, leaving her 464 shy of the record Ami Milligan set from 2013-2016 (2,899). She dished out 33 assists, one shy of her season-high, and collected 13 digs in the win over North Central…Libero Jenna Khoury (Farmington Hills, Mich.) served up a career-high five aces and came up with 27 digs (one shy of her career high) and OH Kelsey Gustafson (Armada, Mich.) completed a double-double of 12 kills and a season high 21 digs vs. North Central…Kate Winter (White Lake, Mich.) knocked down 17 kills and four blocks in the Britons four set MIAA victory over Olivet last Tuesday.


Alma (11-8, 1-2)

The Scots went 1-2 at the Millikin University Fall Triangular last weekend. Alma fell 3-0 to Coe on Friday (Oct. 4), defeated Simpson 3-1 and fell 3-0 to Millikin on Saturday (Oct. 5). Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.) led the Scots (10-7) with nine kills on Friday; Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn.) was right behind with eight and a .583 kill percentage. Ullrich led the Scots with 19 combined kills in two Saturday matches. Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky.) was close behind with 17 followed by Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.) with 16. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich.) had a total of 75 assists over all three games; Bailey Cantrell (Holt, Mich. / Mason) led with 47 digs. Alma hit .317 in the win over Simpson, led by Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich.) with a .429 kill percentage and Ullrich with .391. The Scots had at least a dozen kills in all four sets and enjoyed a comfortable eight-point win average over three sets.


No. 2 Calvin (13-1, 2-0)

No report submitted. Calvin held its No. 2 ranking the the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.


No. 20 Hope (11-4, 1-1)

Did not compete.


Kalamazoo (10-8, 0-3)

The Hornets dropped both of their matches this week beginning with a three-set loss at Calvin and following it with a five-set non-conference loss to Saint Mary's. Madi Goodman led Kalamazoo with 21 kills on the week and Ashley Rill followed with 12. Goodman's 238 kills place her third in the MIAA and her 3.35 kills per set are good for fourth in the conference. Taylor Ferguson tallied 27 digs in the two matches to pace the Hornets. Ferguson now has 297 this season which are the fourth best in the league. Grace Kraft assisted on Hornets attacks 53 times this week and is now third in the league with 8.61 assists per set. The Hornets return to action Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Hope before traveling to Grace Christian for two matches on Saturday.


Olivet (11-5, 1-2)

Olivet fell to Albion College in four sets in its only match last week. Junior Laken Groll recorded 14 of the 45 Comet kills. Audrey Lama had nine kills and a team-best .286 attack percentage. Senior Madelyn Notenbaum dished out 25 set assists. Senior Gabrielle Mundt topped the defense with 27 digs.


Saint Mary's (8-8, 1-1)

The Belles posted a 2-0 record with a 3-1 conference win over Adrian and 3-2 non-conference victory against Kalamazoo. Courtney Pelletier had a season-high 20 digs in her first match as a libero in the win over Adrian. Lindsey Pelletier put down a career-best 21 kills while hitting .462 to lead all players in the Kalamazoo match. Nicole Lukens (kills-digs), Megan Collantes (kills-digs), and Morgan VanderWey (assists-digs) each had double-doubles in both contests.


Trine (12-6, 3-0)

The Thunder came up with a victory in their lone contest of the week defeating Alma in five sets. Junior Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind.) led the way offensively with 22 kills and a .356 attack percentage.
