Calvin Battles Back but Falls in NCAA Division III Volleyball Quarterfinals

Traliing 2-0 heading into the third set of their NCAA Division III Volleyball National Quarterfinal match with Trinity, the Calvin volleyball team managed to pull even before dropping the decisive fifth set in a 3-2 setback to Trinity Thursday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Trinity (37-4) won the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-20, benefitting from a .302 hitting percentage. Calvin put together a key 7-0 run after a 13-13 tie in the third set to take the critical set, 25-19. Set four featured 17 ties as the two teams battled back and forth, but a kill and ensuing service ace by Calvin's Sarah DeVries gave the fourth set to Calvin, 26-24.

Despite no hitting errors in the fifth set, Calvin succumbed to four service aces by Trinity, including on the match's final point.

Trinity out-blocked Calvin, 11-5, and out-aced the Knights, 13-9. For the match, Calvin combined for a .277 hitting percentage while Trinity settled in for a .261 clip.

Calvin's DeVries concluded a stellar career with a triple-double against Trinity, amassing a match-best 25 kills to go with 12 digs and 28 assists. DeVries also had a match-high five service aces. Heidi Westra just missed a double-double with 21 kills paired with nine digs. Aubrey Wrubel led the Knights with 23 digs, and Anna Schriemer handed out 32 assists.

Calvin concludes the 2019 season with a 27-3 record.
