Calvin Tops Hope for MIAA Volleyball Tournament Championship

In a title match between two of the top 10 nationally-ranked teams, the Calvin volleyball team held home court Saturday night to defeat Hope, 3-1, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Volleyball Tournament championship match. With the tournament title, the Knights receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship.

Calvin, ranked third nationally, benefitted from a triple-double from MIAA Most Valuable Player Sarah DeVries, as the senior tallied team-highs of 16 kills and 18 digs to go with 22 assists.

Calvin took the first game of the night, but Hope (No. 10 in AVCA poll) evened the score at 1-1 after winning game two, 25-16, thanks to hitting .314 in the stanza. Calvin regrouped to win the third, 25-20, and the Knights were emphatic with a 25-16 effort in the fourth.

For the match, Calvin hit .287 as a team; Kelsey Smith added 10 kills for the Knights.

The 2019 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship field will be announced Monday, Nov. 11 on ncaa.com.
