Around the MIAA
Adrian (9-13, 2-4)
The Adrian College volleyball team had only one match last week, falling to Calvin on the road 3-0 last Tuesday. The Bulldogs were able to pick up 23 points in the first set in the loss. Adrian will host Hope on Wednesday, Oct. 24 for its last home match of the year before wrapping up the season at Kalamazoo on Saturday.
Albion (15-11, 4-3)
Middle blocker Taylor Rosenthal (Vicksburg, Mich.) became the third Albion volleyball player to achieve 1,000 career kills during the three-set victory over Kalamazoo last Tuesday. She finished the week with 1,032 kills…Middle blocker Marie Pregenzer (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) hit .346 (34-6-81) and chipped in with 11 blocks and five aces as Albion achieved a 3-1 record in four matches last week…Setter Grace VanDorn (North Aurora, Ill.) produced a season-high 55 assists and 10 digs in the four-set victory over Denison last Saturday. Only eight setters have dished out more assists in a four-set match this season…Libero Monica Shuk (Milford, Mich./Mercy) averaged 5.38 digs per set last week.
Alma (18-5, 6-1)
The Alma volleyball team started their week off with a home conference win Tuesday over Adrian College, 3-1. Sophomore setter Haley Novak (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) had a career-high 53 assists. The 2018 senior class was honored before the match. The Scots then played in the Carnegie Mellon Tournament over the weekend. Although Alma won a total of five sets through three matches, they could not pull out an overall match victory. The team currently stands second in the conference heading into the final week of the regular season. They could finish as high as first, or as low as third in the MIAA.
No. 1 Calvin (23-1, 6-0)
Oct. 16: Defeated Adrian 3-0. Anna Kamp led Calvin with 14 kills, six digs and a .367 hitting percentage. Freshman Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison) had a great performance with seven kills, two digs, four aces, two block assists and a hitting percentage of .500. Oct. 19-20 Competed in Elmhurst Tournament in Elmhurst, Ill. Defeated UW-Whitewater, 3-0. Anna Kamp racked up 15 kills and a .414 hitting percentage to go with 11 digs and three block assists. Defeated Carthage 3-1 •, Anna Kamp led Calvin with 17 kills, 10 digs and one ace. Sarah DeVries had 10 kills, 30 assists, five blocks and two aces. Defeated Aurora 3-2. DeVries had a huge match with 18 kills, 34 assists and eight digs. Kamp had 18 kills and 12 digs.
No. 15 Hope (22-5, 5-1)
Hope won three of three matches last week, beginning with a four-set win at home against Saint Mary's. Six different Hope players recorded at least eight kills for Hope (21-4 overall) against Saint Mary's. Freshman McKenna Otto of Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton North) led the attack with 15 kills. At the Elmhurst Invitational, the Flying Dutch defeated UW-Stevens Point in three sets and lost to No. 20 UW-Whitewater in five sets.
Kalamazoo (4-22, 0-6)
The Kalamazoo College volleyball team ended the week with an 0-3 record after matches with Albion, UW-Platteville, and Wheaton. Madi Goodman led the Hornet attack with 34 kills in the three matches. Zoey Ammon added 83 assists on the week for Kalamazoo, while Maddie Wojcik and Sohpie Woodhams contributed 28 and 24 digs respectively. Kalamazoo will wrap up MIAA play this week with matches at Saint Mary's and home against Adrian.
Olivet (14-13, 2-4)
The Olivet College volleyball team split four three-set matches at its home tournament. The Comets' wins were against Finlandia and UW-Platteville. Earlier in the week, Olivet lost in four sets to Alma.
Saint Mary's (11-17, 1-5)
The Belles had a competitive showing at No. 13 Hope on Tuesday before posting a 1-2 record at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament over the weekend. Audrey Shannon tallied her 1,000th dig with the Belles and led all players with 29 digs at Hope. Morgan VanderWey surpassed 1,000 assists for the season, and Nicole Lukens rose above the 500-dig plateau for 2018.
Trine (10-10, 2-4)
The Trine University women's volleyball team took down host Manchester University in commanding fashion by sweeping the opposition 3-0. Sophomore Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) led the way offensively for Trine finishing the contest with 11 kills.
