Around the MIAA

Adrian (9-7, 2-1)

The Adrian College volleyball team won both of its matches last week without losing a single set. The Bulldogs defeated St. Mary’s in conference action on Wednesday before taking down Defiance on Saturday. Sophomore setter Liz Susitko had an impressive week, totaling 49 assists in the two matches and was named MIAA Specialist of the Week for the first time in her career.


Albion (10-5, 3-0)

Middle blocker Marie Pregenzer (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) hit .333 (13-4-27), middle blocker Taylor Rosenthal (Vicksburg, Mich.) and outside hitter Kelsey Gustafson (Armada, Mich.) reached double figures in kills while setter Grace VanDorn (North Aurora, Ill.) finished a double-double (38 assists, 10 digs) in the three set sweep of Olivet last Wednesday…Rosenthal finished with two blocks (a solo and assist) to move her career total to 228 and into a tie with Keri Slane (2005-2008) for second on Albion's all-time list.


Alma (12-2, 2-1)

The Alma College volleyball team put away Trine University 3-1 on Wednesday (Sept. 26) after a rough start. It lost the first set 25-15 but eventually found its way behind a balanced attack. Sara Majerle (McBain, Mich./McBain Public) is currently sixth in the MIAA in kills per set with 2.97. Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) is first in the league in total blocks with 49 and fourth in hit percentage at .338 percent.


No. 1 Calvin (13-0, 2-0)

Now the unanimous No. 1 after receiving all 70 first-place votes in the Oct. 2 AVCA Poll, Calvin improved to 13-0 overall and to 2-0 in the MIAA with a three-set win at Kalamazoo Wednesday. Recently named the AVCA Division III National Player of the Week for the second time in her career, junior Sarah DeVries just missed a triple-double against the Hornets, compiling 10 assists, 19 assists and nine digs. Freshman Kelsey Smith and senior Anna Kamp added nine kills apiece. The Knights remain ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, hitting the high-water mark for the fourth consecutive week. The Knights travel to Trine on Tuesday and host Albion on Friday.


No. 18 Hope (12-4, 1-1)

Hope returned from the weekend Millikin Midseason Showcase with a 1-2 record. The Flying Dutch dropped a tough five-set match to Millikin University on Friday. On Saturday, they won on a forfeit over Buena Vista, and fell to 10th-ranked Thomas More College in three sets.


Kalamazoo (3-12, 0-3)

The Kalamazoo College volleyball team lost in three sets to No. 1 Calvin College last Wednesday. Madi Goodman led the Hornets with six kills. Rachel Girard, Shelby Suseland and Kate Schultz each had four. Grace Kraft finished with 18 assists while Maddie Wojcik had 12 digs. Kalamazoo returns to action at home Tuesday, Oct. 2 with a 7 p.m. match against Hope.


Olivet (11-9, 1-2)

The Olivet College volleyball team posted a 2-2 record last weekend at the Gallaudet (D.C.) Worthington Classic. Junior Morgan Champion was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 61 kills, seven service aces and 66 digs in four matches. Earlier in the week, Champion led Olivet with 10 kills in three-set loss at home against Albion College.


Saint Mary's (8-10, 0-2)

The Belles went 1-2 on the week with a 3-0 loss at Adrian on Wednesday night and a 1-1 showing at Dominican on Saturday. Nicole Lukens had a double-double in each of the team's three contests. Morgan VanderWey averaged nearly nine assists per set as she surpassed the 600-assist plateau on the season.


Trine (8-8, 1-2)

The Thunder lost their lone contest of the week, falling to Alma by 3-1. Sophomore Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) continues to lead the team offensively with 185 kills so far this season.
