Just one MIAA date had teams in action mid-week, leaving the weekend free for non-conference competition for five teams. Among the highlights:
• #1 Calvin just missed on a sweep week, taking just 16 sets to defeat five opponents. The Knights started with a 3-0 win at Saint Mary's Oct. 12, with Laura Danhoff (Sr., MH, Willard, Ohio) leading the Knights with 12 kills and three service aces. Calvin then swept No. 17 Elmhurst and Clarkson at their own Midwest Invitational Oct. 14; Danhoff teammed with Tessa Van Laare (Jr., OH, Toronto, Ontario) and Anna Kamp (So., OH, Orland Park, Ill.) to tally 63 kills in the two matches. A straight-set win over Wheaton started Saturday's action for Calvin, and a 3-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan wrapped up the weekend; Kamp was named to the all-tournament team for her stellar performances.
• #5 Hope defeated Olivet in MIAA action Oct. 12, 3-0, on the shoulders of 11 kills from Sarah Feldpausch (Sr., OH, White Cloud, Mich.). On the weekend, the Dutch went 3-1 in non-conference action, defeating Wheaton, Heidelberg, and Clarkson; but Hope was topped by #17 Elmhurst, 3-1. In the 3-0 sweep against Wheaton Oct. 14, Courtney Van Houzen (Sr., MB, Traverse City, Mich.) was impressive with team bests of seven kills, eight blocks, and three service aces. After falling to the nationally-ranked Elmhurst squad, Hope rebounded with a five-set victory, winning the last two sets to take the match. Alexis Thompson (Sr., L, Monroe, Mich.) garnered all-tournament accolades for her efforts.
• Alma stayed in the hunt for a top four spot in the MIAA standings with a 3-1 win over Albion Oct. 12. Dakota Pelach (Jr., S/OPP, Gaylord, Mich.) registered her sixth triple-double of the season thanks to 10 kills, 23 digs, and 23 assists against the Brits. The Scots then split a tri-match at DePauw, defeating Kenyon 3-0 before falling to the host school, 3-1.
• Adrian went 2-1 in non-conference play on the week, with one home match and a tri-match at Manchester (Ind.) The Bulldogs defeated Defiance at home Oct. 14, 3-1, with Margo Joubran (Sr., RS, Mount Morris, Mich.) smashing 20 kills. At the tri-match, Adrian bested the host side 3-9 after falling to Mount St. Joseph 3-1. Joubran again led Adrian in kills in both matches with 15 vs. Mount St. Joseph and 13 against Manchester.
