Adrian Women's Volleyball Outlasts Host Olivet in Five-Set Thriller

OLIVET, Mich – The Adrian College women's volleyball team overcame a tough Olivet squad in five sets (12-25, 25-17, 25-23, 17-25, 18-16) on Saturday at the Cutler Event CenterJordan Brisson tallied a double-double, her fifth of the year, with 12 kills and 11 digs for the match.

Margo Joubran and Sydney Martines both recorded double digit kills with 16 and 12, respectively. Rachel Wathen (19), Olivia Welch (16) and Haley Mellon (11) all had double digit digs for the Bulldog defense. Setters junior Marisa Dion and senior Nicole Motz had 28 and 23 assists apiece.

Olivet jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the first set 25-12. Adrian would then win the next two sets to set up a winning fourth set. However, the Comets would fight back to win the fourth set and force a deciding fifth set, which the Bulldogs would win 18-16 to take the match.

Joubran, who hit .350 on 40 swings, registered three kills in a row to bring Adrian within a point each time in the deciding fifth set. With the score tied 15-all, a kill by freshman Welch (7 kills) and three Olivet attack errors gave Adrian the match. The Bulldogs outhit the Comets .296 to .226 in the final stanza.

Olivet's Marissa Guile paced all student-athletes with 24 kills and .467 hitting percentage, while Re'Gene Thompson (6 blocks) added 18 kills and Allison Turner, 15.

Adrian got off to a slow start in the opening set as it was held to a .094 attack percentage while Olivet had a .419 clip to win by 13 points.

The Comets slip to 14-11 on the season and 3-10 in the MIAA.

The win--their second-straight conference road win--puts the Bulldogs in sole ownership of fourth in the MIAA standings with three matches remaining in the regular season. Adrian will look to keep their position in the standings when they travel to Albion on Tuesday, October 27 to face the Britons. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
