Calvin sweeps by Albion

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Stephanie Thurner collected 10 kills and hit .500 for Albion College in a three-set volleyball loss to Calvin College, the fifth-ranked team in Division III, Tuesday night.

The scores were 25-18, 25-15, 25-15.

Ami Milligan served up two aces as Albion started the night on a three-point scoring run.

Calvin answered with a pair of kills from Maggie Kamp and Laura Danhoff produced a kill and an ace as the Knights reeled off five quick points.

Thurner knocked down a kill and Calvin had an attack error as Albion forged a tie at 6-6. Calvin scored the next seven to seize a 13-6 lead and it never trailed again in the first set.

Kamp collected three kills as Calvin scored four in a row to pull away from Albion in the second set.

Danhoff served two aces as Calvin opened the third set on a 4-0 scoring run.

Thurner finished the night with just one attack error as she collected 10 kills in 18 attempts. Jessica Konieczny knocked down three blocks. Kristin Yeager and Milligan led the defensive effort with 14 and 10 digs, respectively.

Kamp hit .594 in racking up 20 kills for Calvin. She was also credited with 15 digs.

Danhoff also reached double figures in kills, finishing with 12 for the Knights.

Albion, 10-4 overall and 1-3 against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals, returns home for a 6:30 p.m. Friday match against Trine University.
