Hope Volleyball Drops Round 1 In 'The Rivalry" To Calvin

Round 1 of The Rivalry went against the ninth-ranked Hope College volleyball team, with the Flying Dutch falling in three sets at second-ranked Calvin on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 defeat in front of a Van Noord Arena crowd of 2,527.

Hope coach Becky Schmidt said there were too many facets of the game where Calvin was better.

"Anytime that these two teams play against each other there are going to be things that Calvin does better and things that we do better," Schmidt said. "Tonight we got beat in too many spots."

Junior outside hitter Sarah Feldpausch of White Cloud, Michigan (White Cloud HS), topped the Flying Dutch with eight kills. Hope hit .079 as  a team.

Senior setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport, Michigan (Fruitport HS), totaled 17 assists.

Senior libero Allie Mitchell of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS), had a team-best 12 digs.

The night was a milestone win for Calvin coach Amber Warners, a former head coach at Hope. It was her 400th win with the Knights in 466 games.

Calvin is now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play. The Knights lead the all-time series 60-29.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they host Trine. Start time is 6:30 p.m. at DeYoung Volleyball Gymnasium.
