OLIVET, Mich. – Albion College utilized its offensive weapons to subdue Olivet College in a three-set (25-21, 26-24, 25-14) Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball match Friday night.

Halle Thom produced a team-high nine kills, Lauren Outwater added eight kills and two service aces, Taylor Rosenthal and Stephanie Thurner knocked down six kills apiece and Jessica Konieczny chipped in with five kills and three block assists.

Albion overcame a slow start, hitting .070 (nine kills and six errors in 43 attacks) in the first set. The Britons scored the last five points to rally from a 21-20 deficit. Outwater's kill forged a tie at 21 and Monica Shuk served up aces on consecutive points. Rosenthal and Outwater combined for a block on the final point.

"Olivet pushed us to find shots to score and we had to work really hard to challenge them in defense," Albion coach Kristin de St. Aubin said.

Albion raised its hitting percentage to .205 in the second set and .211 in the third.

Nearly lost in the offensive metrics was the defense and passing by Shuk, Kristin Yeager and Rachel Zawodny. Shuk finished with 19 digs and four aces, Yeager had 15 digs and an ace, and Zawodny tacked on six digs.

Albion finished the first week of league play with a 1-1 record. Albion, 5-1 overall, will travel to Illinois Saturday for matches against North Park University and North Central College.
