Nine MIAA Women’s Track & Field Athletes Make Cut For NCAA Outdoor Nationals

Nine Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's track & field athletes will be competing at the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Waverly, Iowa.

Wartburg College is hosting the three-day event that runs Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28.

MIAA champion Calvin is sending three to outdoor nationals: senior McKenzie Diemer of Caledonia, Michigan, junior Lauren Strohbehn of Stillwater, Minnesota, and sophomore Bethany Love of Kentwood, Michigan.

Diemer is seeded seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after a qualifying run of 10:45.94. This is her second consecutive trip to outdoor nationals.

Strohbehn ranks seventh in the 10,000 meters and 13th in the 5,000 meters with times of 35:32.52 and 16:54.645. She placed 20th in the 5,000 meters at the 2015 Division III Outdoor Championships.

Love is seeded 20th in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 2 inches. This is first appearance and outdoor nationals.

Hope also has qualified three for nationals: senior Jane Pearson of Lake City, Michigan, senior Julia Stock of Norton Shores, Michigan and junior Erin Herrmann of Wheaton, Illinois.

Herrmann is ranked fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after clocking a time of 10 minutes, 40.44 seconds.

Herrmann is contending to earn All-America honors in three sports this school year. She already has claimed the distinction in women's cross country with a 34th-place finish and indoor track & field with a 12th-place effort in the 3,000 meters.

Pearson is seeded 15th in the heptathlon with a score of 4,416 points.

Stock is ranked 17th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:02.54.

Trine sophomore Kara Eck of Auburn, Indiana ranks second in the nation in the shot put at 14.62 meters (47 feet, 11 ¾ inches) and seventh in the hammer throw at 55.37 meters (181-8). Eck earned All-America honors in the shot put at the NCAA indoor championships in March. She qualified for outdoor nationals in the shot put as a freshman.

Albion junior Jessica Shaw of Allegan is seeded 10th in the 10,000 meters with a run of 35:45.91. She is believed to be one of the first Albion women to advance to the NCAA Championship in an event on the exclusively on the track. She is a two-time qualifier for nationals in cross country.

Alma junior Kaitlyn Arnold of Jackson, Michigan ranks 15th in the 5,000 meters with a run of 16:58.84. This is her first trip to nationals.
