Around the MIAA

Adrian

The Adrian College Bulldogs competed at the Tiffin Open over the weekend. Violet Smith finished the day with a fourth place finish in the weight throw at 14.81m and with a time of 2:49.92, Sydney Feekings placed fifth in the 800m.


Albion

Competed in the Purple and Gold intersquad meet; the team's next intercollegiate competition is slated for Friday, Jan. 24 at the Friday Night Meet in Ada, Ohio.


Alma

Twenty-eight Scots set new collegiate PRs as the track and field team competed in the SVSU Doug Hansen Open last week. Junior Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich.) set a new PR in the shot put for the second straight week, improving on the distance that earned her MIAA Field Athlete of the Week. She finished fifth with a distance of 12.14 meters. 


Calvin

The Calvin women's track and field team opened its indoor season Friday night at the Bill Clinger Classic on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The Knights had a collection of stellar performances. Sophomore Sadie Heeringa carried the early momentum by placing 13th in the mile run with a career-best time of 5:09.87 in the mile run. The time ranks 24th on the national (Division III) performance list. Freshman Lauren VandenBosch (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) also produced a career-best time of 5:32.72 in the mile run. The Knights also had a strong showing in the weights. In the shot put, sophomore Tanya Visser placed seventh with a throw of 37-3 3/4. Sophomore Rachel Herwyer (Caledonia, Mich.) was 12th with a throw of 35-2 1/2. In the weight throw, sophomore Waverly VerHill took fifth with a career-best throw of 49-11. That throw ranks 34th on the national (Division III) performance list. Calvin is back in action on February 1 when it competes at the Mike Lints Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University.


Hope

Addyson Gerig tied for eighth place in the high jump and took 13th in the triple jump for the Hope College women's indoor track and field team at the Grand Valley State University Bill Clinger Classic on Friday. Gerig cleared 1.55 meters in the high jump (5 feet, 1 inch). The senior (Holland, Mich.) leapt 9.95 meters in the triple jump (32-7 ¾). Senior Mitchel Achien'g (Nairobi, Kenya) placed 13th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds. Senior Sally Hansma (Grand Haven, Mich.) recorded a 16th-place 800 meter run of 2:23.26.


Olivet

Olivet was scheduled to open its season Jan. 18 at the Trine University Don & Riley Zimmer Classic but inclement weather cancelled the meet. Olivet will now compete for the first time this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, at the Jet's Pizza Invitational, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.


Trine

Did not compete. Event was cancelled due to weather.
