Around the MIAA

Adrian (0-2, 0-0)

The Adrian College women's tennis team fell 7-2 to Bethel (Ind.) in its home-opener on Thursday. Earning match points for the Bulldogs was Sara Anthony and Julia Maltbie at third doubles. In singles action, Elizabeth Himebach claimed her sixth-slotted singles matchup after forcing a third set (6-2, 3-6, 3-10).


Albion (0-0, 0-0)

The doubles team of Ellie Debo and Mya Duncan recorded a pair of victories in doubles action as the Albion College men's tennis team started its fall competition in an invitational tournament at Hope College. Debo and Duncan defeated a team from Cornerstone as well as Albion teammates Breh Ruger and Namara Swillum.


Alma (3-0, 0-0)

Alma defeated Concordia University Ann Arbor 8-1 on Saturday (Sept. 14). Sophomore Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill.) and senior Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich.) led the way on the singles side while Rachel Moran won her first collegiate match 6-0, 6-0.


Calvin (0-0, 0-0)

Calvin competed at the two-day Hope Fall Invitational this past weekend. Junior Sidney Ellsworth, sophomore Maya Klopfenstein and sophomore Emily Schellenboom all posted 2-1 singles records during the tournament. In doubles play, senior Brittney Statema and Schellenboom posted 3-1 records. Sophomore Grace Brown and Maya Klopfenstein both went 2-0 together as a doubles tandem.


Hope (0-0, 0-0)

At the Hope College Fall Invitational, the Flying Dutch finished with a 24-1 singles record and a 13-1 doubles record on Friday-Saturday, September 13-14. Six Hope players went 3-0 in singles play, including returning MIAA MVP Claire Hallock (Lakeland, Fla.) and returning All-MIAA first-team selections Amanda Bandrowski (Traverse City, Mich.) and Sydney Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind.).


Kalamazoo (0-0, 0-0)

Kalamazoo competed in the Hope Invitational to begin its season this past weekend. Laura Hanselman and Caroline Norton played as the fourth seed in the A doubles bracket and finished with a 2-2 record. Maddy Winarski paired with Lauren Marshall in doubles play and the duo finished the weekend with a 2-0 record. Hanselman, Winarski, and Norton each tallied 2-1 records in singles play as Norton defeated the fifth seed in one of her two wins. The Hornets now turn their attention to the ITA Central Regional which is in Kalamazoo Sept. 19-21.


Olivet (2-2, 0-0)

Olivet dropped a 7-2 decision to Indiana University-South Bend in its only match last week. A match against Concordia University-Ann Arbor was postponed Friday due to the weather. Against IU-South Bend, the No. 1 doubles duo of freshman Makenzie Borg and senior Miranda Pier won an 8-3 pro-set. Sophomore Julia Miklusicak posted Olivet's win in singles at the No. 6 slot.


Saint Mary's (0-0, 0-0)

The Belles competed at the Hope Invitational over the weekend. Alyssa Gulli advanced to the quarterfinal round of the A Singles bracket before falling to top-seeded Claire Hallock from Hope. Kathleen McLeod advance to the round of 16 in the B Singles bracket with back-to-back straight-set wins. Lucy Chamberlin and Nicole Becker earned three wins in the B Doubles bracket, and Lily Brandt and Kathleen McLeod also paired up for three wins in the B Doubles competition.


Trine (0-4, 0-0)

The Thunder dropped a close match to finish off the week. They traveled to Anderson (Ind.) University and took the contest into the final match with a 4-4 tie, but dropped the final match and came home with a 5-4 loss. Trine falls to 0-4 following the loss.
