Around the MIAA (through March 31)

Adrian (2-9, 1-0)

The Adrian College women’s tennis team split last week, losing to Spring Arbor 7-2 on Tuesday and then beating Albion by the same score on Saturday to open MIAA play with a win. The match against Albion was originally scheduled to be played in Adrian but was moved to Albion’s campus so it could be played indoors due to the low temperatures on Saturday. The Bulldogs took all three doubles matches and four of the six doubles matches in the win. Junior Sara Anthony won with classmate Samantha Cyrus at the top doubles spot and then cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at two singles for a team-leading fourth win of the year.

Albion (4-5, 0-1)

Kathryn Valade and Saige Jost scored points for Albion College in singles, but Adrian College took a 7-2 victory over the Britons in a MIAA match inside the Ungrodt Tennis Center. Valade, playing No. 3 singles, scored an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory. Jost also won in straight sets at No. 4 singles. All six singles matches were decided in straight sets, though Lauren Solano (No. 1) and Madeline Samra (No. 5) lost tiebreakers to decide the second set.

Alma (8-3, 1-0)

Alma defeated Olivet 7-2 on Friday (March 29) afternoon for its seventh consecutive win and eighth out of 11 matches this season. Junior Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich.) earned the Scots' only sweep, freshman Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Rae Claramunt 6-1, 7-5 and sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich.) defeated Miranda Pier 6-1, 6-4. No Alma player dropped a set on the day.

Calvin (8-3, 0-0)

Calvin cracked the ITA Division III Central Region rankings for the first time this spring, moving into the 19th spot in the team rankings. Individually, sophomore Leah Newhof moved into the regional singles rankings at the No. 22 spot. Calvin also defeated Spring Arbor 8-1 on Wednesday to stretch its winning streak to four matches and improve to 8-3 overall.

#29 Hope (6-3, 1-0)

Amanda Bandrowski joined teammate Claire Hallock in a select group of Hope tennis players to reach 60 career singles wins during Thursday’s 9-0 victory against Olivet College at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts. There are only 14 60-match winners in all, including Hallock with 61 and Bandrowski with 60. Hallock and Bandrowski both won their singles matches against Olivet, 6-0, 6-0.

Kalamazoo (4-4, 0-0)

Did not compete.

Olivet (2-10, 0-3)

The Olivet College women's tennis team lost three MIAA matches in a four-day span last week, falling to Hope and Saint Mary's, 9-0, and to Alma, 7-2. Against Alma, Emily Foulk and Sydnie Weller won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles, and Jordin Ellens won 10-7 at No. 6 singles.

Saint Mary's (9-6, 2-0)

The Belles posted a 2-2 record in a busy five-day span as the team earned MIAA wins over Trine and Olivet. Alyssa Gulli was 7-1 combined in doubles and singles play as the freshman posted a 4-0 record at three singles on the week. Elizabeth Preister teamed up with Gulli for three doubles wins while also earning three singles victories at the number five flight.

Trine (6-6, 0-1)

The Thunder traveled to face Saint Mary's College in their MIAA opener and came up just short. The team lost the dual 6-3 but two of those losses came in tight matches, one coming during singles and one during doubles. Freshman Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind.) continues to pace the team, going undefeated in the contest.
