Around the MIAA (through April 14 matches)

Adrian (5-11, 3-2)

The Adrian College women’s tennis team went 2-0 in a pair of conference matches with wins over Alma and Olivet last week. The Bulldogs beat the Scots on Wednesday and then followed it up with a 9-0 beating of Olivet, AC’s first shutout since 2015. Four members of the Black and Gold went a perfect 2-0 in both doubles and singles last week and they all happened to be juniors. Samantha Cyrus and Sara Anthony won both matches at one doubles and then went 2-0 at the top two singles spots, respectively. Makayla Jorgensen and Elena Bishop had a clean slate at the three doubles spot and then won matches at the three, four, and five singles spots over the two matches.

Albion (4-9, 0-5)

Albion was defeated by Trine and Kalamazoo by 9-0 scores last week.

Alma (9-7, 2-4)

The women's tennis team dropped two matches last week, 7-2 to Adrian and 8-1 to Trine. The team of juniors Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich.) and Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich.) earned two doubles wins, 8-4 against the Bulldogs and 8-5 over the Thunder, while sophomore Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich.) scored a big 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Adrian's Mackenna Crowley.

Calvin (11-5, 2-2)

Calvin defeated #13 ranked Augustana in a comeback win of 5-4 before a 6-3 setback to Saint Mary’s.

#32 Hope (12-5, 5-0)

The Hope College women's tennis team went 3-0 last week, including 9-0 MIAA victories against Saint Mary's College and Trine University. The Flying Dutch also defeated regionally ranked Augustana College (Illinois), 8-1. The 32nd-ranked Flying Dutch improved to 12-5 overall and 5-0 in MIAA play.

Kalamazoo (7-5, 3-1)

The Hornets defeated both Olivet and Albion 9-0 this past week to improve their conference record to 3-1. Laura Hanselman was victorious in both matches at one singles. She also won 8-0 with Sonal Bahl at one doubles against Olivet. Hanselman was named MIAA Player of the Week for her efforts. Caroline Norton improved her MIAA record to 4-0 on the season with two wins at No. 4 singles. The Hornets will continue MIAA play against Saint Mary's on Tuesday before facing off against Lake Forest and Wheaton over the weekend.

Olivet (2-13, 0-6)

The Olivet College women's tennis team dropped 9-0 matches to Kalamazoo and Albion last week.

Saint Mary's (12-8, 4-1)

The Belles bounced back from a 9-0 loss to league-leading Hope on Wednesday with a strong 6-3 win over Calvin on Saturday. Alyssa Gulli, Lilly Chamberlin, and Elizabeth Preister each won at both doubles and singles against the Knights. Chamberlin broke serve to take a 7-5 win in her second set at four singles and clinch the victory for the team. Preister used an early lead in a second-set tiebreaker to fend off her counterpart at the five singles flight for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win.

Trine (10-7, 4-2)

The Thunder finished the week 2-1 against MIAA opponents. They began the week with a sweep of visiting Albion before being swept in turn by Hope. They finished the week with an 8-1 victory over Alma. Three members of the Thunder finished the week undefeated aside from their matches against Hope.
