Hope Women's Tennis Defeats Albion, Improves To 5-0 In MIAA Play

The Hope College women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win at Albion on Wednesday. The 34th-ranked Flying Dutch (12-4 overall) remained atop the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings after improving their league record to 5-0.

Hope opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches by 8-2 scores.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and junior Nancy Benda of Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS) defeated Lauren Rasmussen and Heather Vogt.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Anna Garcia of Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS) and freshman Taylor LaBarge of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS) beat Chrissy Gauss and Lauren Solano.

At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Natalie Rahrig of Fort Wayne, Indiana (Bishop Luers HS) and freshman Catherine Wingrove of Okemos, Michigan (Okemos HS) topped Rachel Berry and Olivia Conover.

The Flying Dutch won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and one when an opposing player could not finish the match.

At No. 2 singles, Garcia claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win against Solano.

At No. 3 singles, Holaway earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against Rasmussen.

At No. 4 singles, junior Kate Mader of Granger, Indiana (Penn HS) beat Gauss 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 5 singles, Wingrove downed Conover 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 6 singles, sophomore Amanda Susnak of Lowell, Michigan (Lowell HS) defeated Berry 6-1, 6-0.

Benda won at No. 1 singles when Vogt retired after losing the first set 6-1.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when the Flying Dutch host Adrian for a 2:30 p.m. match at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.
