Women's Recap

Calvin University opened day two of the 2023 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships defending their title in the 200 free relay with an MIAA record-breaking time of 1:33.58.  The previous record of 1:33.83 was set by the Knights in 2018.  This year's winning quartet included junior Maggie Farrell, sophomore Sydney Sonday, junior Isabella Gable, and senior Hannah Brown.  Hope College finished second with a time of 1:34.06, followed by Albion College in third place (1:38.06).

Knight Isabella Gable earned her second win of the day after clocking in at 5:02.85 in the 500 free.  Olivet College junior Jennifer Mann was the runner-up in the 500 free with a time of 5:04.15, followed by Hope freshman Ashlea Swingewood in third place (5:05.74).

Hope swept the top four finishes in the 200 IM.  Sophomore Greta Gidley led the way in record-breaking fashion with a time of 2:01.25.  She broke the previous record of 2:04.04, which was placed in 2022 by classmate Sara Kraus.  Kraus came in second place after clocking in at 2:03.18.  Freshman Katie Hermann finished in third place (2:04.99), followed by senior Alyssa Kerkman in fourth place (2:08.07).

Maggie Farrell recorded her second win of the evening with a first-place finish in the 50 free (23.51).  Teammate Sydney Sonday finished 0.02 seconds behind for second place and was trailed by Albion sophomore Hannah Fathman in third place with a time of 23.65.

Sophomore Abby Koops of Hope defended her title in the one-meter dive after scoring a 441.15.  Junior teammate Sophia Farbarzhevich recorded a score of 415.75 for a second-place finish, while Kalamazoo College sophomore Sam Vande Pol earned third place with a score of 406.10.

The Flying Dutch earned the 400 medley relay championship title for the fourth-consecutive season after finishing in a time of 3:47.00.  The first-place quartet included Katie Hermann, Sara Kraus, Alyssa Kerkman, and freshman Laurel Wasiniak.  Calvin finished the relay in second place (3:48.05) and was followed by Albion in third place with a time of 3:58.82

Hope leads the championship standings after day two with 435 points.  Calvin is currently in second place with 318 points, followed by Kalamazoo in third place with 199 points.

Men's Recap

Calvin notched a victory in the 200 free relay with an MIAA record-breaking time of 1:18.98 to start the second day of the 2023 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships.  The winning group included seniors Jacob Heeres and Noah Holstege, and juniors Forrest Peterson and Corey Campbell.  Albion placed second (1:21.93) and was followed by Hope in third place with a time of 1:23.19.

Hope senior Bailey Smith clinched the win in the 500 free after clocking in at 4:34.73.  Teammate Conner Halberg, a sophomore on the Flying Dutchmen's roster, finished as the runner-up (4:35.05).  Calvin sophomore Joshua Seidelman rounded out the top three with a time of 4:36.78.

Freshman Timothy Hays of Calvin earned his first-ever MIAA Championship title in the 200 IM after finishing the event in 1:50.98.  Hope sophomore Dallas Fisher served as the runner-up with a time of 1:51.88 and was followed by senior Knight Bryce Miner in third place (1:52.20).

Calvin's Noah Holstege broke his own record in the 50 free after defending his title for the third-straight year.  Today's time of 19.51 broke his previous record of 19.78 which was set in the lead leg of the 200 free relay at the 2021 MIAA Championships.  Albion sophomore Billy Barr concluded the race in second place (20.22) and Knight Jacob Heeres in third place (20.28).

Kalamazoo senior Sam Ankley represented the Hornets on the top podium spot after winning the three-meter dive with a score of 496.55.  Hope junior Ewan Tiongson claimed third place with a score of 467.25 and Albion's Justin Huttenlocher finished third (438.80).

Calvin wrapped up the second day of competition in record-breaking fashion with a time of 3:14.23 in the 400 medley relay -- over four seconds faster than the previous record set in 2017.  The first-place quartet included Noah Holstege, freshman Caleb Gemmen, Forrest Peterson, and Jacob Heeres.  Hope concluded the relay in second place (3:18.45) and Albion finished in third place (3:24.62).

The Knights lead the championship standings with 423 points.  Hope is currently in second place with 327 points and Albion rounds out the top three with a score of 209.
