Three Individuals, One Relay from MIAA Advance to NCAA Division III Swim Finals on Day Four

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Two individuals and one relay from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) will advance to the finals on day four of the 2022 NCAA DIII Swimming and Diving Championships.  The championship meet is taking place March 16-19 at the IUPUI IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Calvin fifth-year senior Julian Iturbe punched a ticket into the 100 free championship finals following a fourth-place finish during prelims.  His time of 43.91 was 0.17 quicker than his seeded time.  Teammate Jacob Heeres tied-for-18th (44.62), which required a swim-off for the last spot in the consolation finals.  Hope sophomore Ben Catton concluded the 100 free in 45.20, followed by Calvin junior Julien Camy in 45.99.

A fourth-place finish with a time of 1:59.59 from Sara Kraus earned the Hope freshman a spot in the 200 back A Finals.

The Calvin men's 400 free relay advances to the championship finals following a third-place performance of 2:57.95, which is faster than their seeded time of 2:59.17.  The quartet includes Iturbe, senior Noah Holstege, sophomore, Forrest Peterson, and Heeres.  Hope concluded the 400 free relay in 3:05.10.  The Flying Dutchmen quartet included freshman Colin Kalkman, sophomore Ben Catton, freshman Conner Halberg, and junior Jack Muller.

Freshman Hannah Fathman of Albion finished the 100 free in 21st place after clocking in at 51.42, while Calvin sophomore Maggie Farrell concluded the event in 52.23.

Catton placed 23rd in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.58.

In the 200 breast, Calvin freshman Haley Thier led the MIAA swimmers in 24th place with a time of 2:22.06.  Albion freshman Mattie Smith concluded the event in 2:23.96, followed by Hope fifth-year senior Emma Schaefer in 2:24.77.

Halberg swam in the first round of the 1650 free this morning.  The top heat will compete in the finals this evening.

Hope freshman Abby Koops looks to advance in the three-meter dive prelims, as she is currently competing in the prelims.

The Calvin women's 400 free relay led the conference with a 21st-place finish (3:29.83).  The quartet included freshman Sydney Sonday, junior Hannah Brown, Farrell, and senior Valerie Edewaard.  Albion followed in 22nd place (3:30.75).  The Brits included Fathman, senior Emily Merucci, junior Sarah Griffiths, and sophomore Sage Gettings.  The Hope quartet finishing in 3:34.11 included sophomore Madeline Tessin, junior Alyssa Kerman, freshman Katie Weedon, and sophomore Delaney Wesolek.

The 2022 NCAA DIII Swimming and Diving Championships day four finals will begin at 6:00 p.m.
