Around the MIAA

Albion

By a margin of one point, the Albion women's swimming and diving team edged the host Hope at the Hope Quad Jan. 17-18. Albion finished with a total of 834 points after edging out Hope who finished with 833. Samantha Swingewood led the Britons with 64 points after a first-place finish in the 400 IM and a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 IM and 200 Fly. Swingewood also came in with a time of 4:46.84 in the 400 IM. Rileigh Eding finished with three second-place finishes in the 50, 100 and 200 Free for a total of 63 points. 


Alma

No. 21 Calvin

Junior Hannabeth Magnussen has already qualified for the upcoming NCAA diving regionals, this past weekend Magnussen added to her diving resume' with back-to-back season-best performances. In a Friday night dual meet win at Grove City, she took first place on both diving boards winning the three-meter board with a score of 248.05 and the one-meter board with a season-best score of 250.65. In a Saturday triangular against nationally-ranked Denison and Carnegie Mellon, she took first place in the three-meter diving competition with a season-best score of 263.35 while placing second on the one-meter board with a season-best score of 258.90. Junior Hannah Chao had a big weekend. Chao picked up a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:59.86) Friday night in a dual meet victory over Grove City College. She also swam on Calvin's first place 200 medley relay team that clocked in with a time of 1:50.61. In a Saturday triangular with top-ranked Denison and 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, she was fourth in the 100 backstroke (58.48) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:10.73). She was part of a 200 medley relay team that was third in 1:49.80 and a member of Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that placed third in a time of 1:38.13. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they host Olivet and Kalamazoo in a triangular at 1 p.m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.


Hope

The Hope College women's swimming and diving team finished the weekend by taking second overall at the two-day quad at Hudsonville High School. The Flying Dutch recorded a total of 833 points Freshman Olivia Robertson (Sturgis, Mich.) took first place in 3-meter diving with a score of 331.75 points. Junior Emma Schaefer (DeWitt, Mich.) came in second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 14.45 seconds. Sophomore Emma Engle (Kalamazoo, Mich.) finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a swim of 18:28.92.


Kalamazoo

Did not compete.


Olivet

Olivet defeated Bethel (Ind.) University, 115-82, Jan. 18 at the Upton Center Pool. Sophomore Kayla Eichaker had the fastest time in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Senior Amelia Tomalka was also a double winner, finishing first in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Senior Abbie Slater won both the one- and three-meter diving. Other individual event winners were junior Kea Kunz in the 100 breaststroke and freshman Sarah LaFoe in the 200 breaststroke. Eichaker, Tomalka, LaFoe and freshman Karley Wheeler took first in the 200 medley relay.
