Around the MIAA

RV Albion

The excitement for the future of the Albion College women's swimming and diving team is building after a third place finish in the MIAA Championship. Albion finished the meet with 681 points, trailing runner up Hope College by just 112 and champion Calvin College by 129.

Alma

The Alma College swimming and diving team wrapped up its season on Saturday (Feb. 23) with the final day of the Championships. Sophomore Allison Brown (Spring Lake, Mich.) set a new program-best in the 100-yard back. The women finished the meet in fifth place.

Calvin

The championship streak run for the Calvin women's swimming and diving team came to an end on Saturday evening as the Knights finished second in the final team standings at the MIAA Championships. Hope snapped Calvin's 14-year stranglehold on the league crown by placing first with a final team total of 810 points with Calvin second with 793 points.

No. 25 Hope

There may be no better way to honor a retiring coach than to hand him the trophy that your team just won during his final season at the helm. The Hope College women's swimming and diving team joyfully — and skillfully — gave co-head coach John Patnott that perfect gift when it captured the league title at the 2019 MIAA Championships on Saturday night at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The championship is the Flying Dutch's first since 2004 and the 22nd MIAA women's title secured by a Patnott-coached team in his 39 years at Hope. (He also coached 12 men's teams to MIA titles.)

To claim its league crown, Hope edged defending-champion Calvin College by 17 points over the course of the three-and-half day championship meet. The Flying Dutch totaled 810 points, while the Knights finished second with 793 points. Albion College took third place with 681 points, Kalamazoo was fourth with 496, Alma was fifth with 236 and Olivet had 176.

Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo College women's swimming and diving team finished fourth at the 2019 MIAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Nicki Bailey had the best performance for the Hornets on Thursday as the sophomore finished second in the 3-meter diving event with an NCAA B-cut score of 430.85. Her point total was just 1.05 out of first place. On Friday, Molly Logsdon won the championship in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.55, winning by just over half a second. Steph Rauhoff finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of :57.71, less than half a second out of first place. Madeline Jump recorded the top finish for the Hornets on Saturday coming in second in the 1-meter diving event with a B-cut score of 433.65. Molly Logsdon finished third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.97. Molly Roberts finished third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.71. The divers are scheduled to compete next at the NCAA III Diving Regionals March 1-2 at Wabash.

Olivet

The Olivet College women's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the 2019 MIAA Championships. Freshman Kayla Eichaker placed 10th in the 100 butterfly, and 13th in the 100 freesyle and 200 butterfly. Junior Abbie Slater finished in seventh-place on both diving boards.
