Around the MIAA

RV Albion

Albion swimmers sought an opportunity to get the feel of a deep pool with the start of the MIAA Championship just three weeks away. So, the Britons loaded the bus last Friday for a meet at Eastern Michigan University. The goal was to make improvements on race strategy…Allison Dasky, a first-year swimmer, turned in a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, sprinting to the wall in 25.07 seconds…Nicole McCann set a season-best time in the 200 backstroke (2:18.47), and Amanda Quitos did likewise in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.00)… The coaching staff was pleased with Emily Merucci's tempo improvement in the 100 backstroke (1:02.01); Courtney Swingewood (1:14.27), Katy Henning (1:11.46), and Lexie Seidel (1:15.85) all had strong performances in the 100 breaststroke.

Alma

The Scots came up short in the regular season finale at Hope College on Saturday (Feb. 2) afternoon by a score of 119.5-89.5. Senior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich.) and freshman Caitlin Jodway (Westland, Mich.) earned first-place finishes for the Scots.

No. 25 Hope

The Flying Dutch remained undefeated in MIAA dual meets with a 119.5-89.5 Senior Day victory against Alma Saturday. Hope won eight events against the Scots, including two relays. Sara Plohetski (South Lyon, Mich.) swept the diving events, winning the 3-meter board with a six-dive total of 267.50 points and the 1-meter board with a score of 247.15 points.

Kalamazoo

The Hornets ended the week with a 1-1 record after a win at Olivet and loss to Calvin. Nicki Bailey and Madeline Jump posted NCAA cuts in the 1M and 3M dives, respectively, on Friday. Emily Tenniswood broke the pool record in the 1650 freestyle en route to the Hornets taking first place in all 13 events in the meet. On Saturday, Bailey broke her own school record in the 1-meter with a score of 448.43. She was named MIAA Diver of the Week on Monday. Swimmer Molly Logsdon was victorious in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday and 200 breaststroke in both meets. She joined Bailey as MIAA Swimmer of the Week. Kalamazoo will return to action in the MIAA Championships on Feb. 20-23 in Holland.

Olivet

The Comets fell to Kalamazoo in a MIAA dual meet before splitting a non-conference double dual, defeating Manchester (Ind.) and losing to Anderson (Ind.). In the double dual, senior Sabrina Butler won three individual events -- 50 free (26.91), 100 free (58.78) and 50 fly (29.50), and swam the leadoff leg of the winning 200 free relay. Freshman Kayla Eichaker took first in the 200 free (2:05.32) and 100 fly (1:03.74). Junior Abbie Slater finished first on both diving boards with 188.20 points on the one-meter and a personal-best 206.80 points on the three-meter. Against Kalamazoo, Slater scored a personal-best 201.30 points on the one-meter board. The Comets conclude the dual portion of their schedule Saturday when Albion visits the Upton Center Pool. Prior to the meet, Olivet will recognize its senior swimmers.
