Multiple Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association student-athletes excelled in the spotlight at the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championship in Shenandoah, Texas, March 15-18.
Calvin placed 12th as a team with a total of 92.5 points, scoring individually as well as relays. Kalamazoo finished with a team score of 11 points, good for 42nd nationally.
Calvin's Abby VanHarn touched third in the 100 free Saturday for the MIAA's best individual finish, with her time of 50.38 tying for third. To qualify for the championship final, VanHarn swam 50.19 in the prelims, which set a Calvin program record.
VanHarn was also an All-American in the 50 free, touching fourth in the prelims with a time of 23.15 before finishing fifth overall in the championship final with an effort of 23.30.
Calvin's 800 Free Relay team finished sixth overall Friday with a time of 7:28.72. Sophomores Madelyn Smith, Anna Serino, and Kendall Murphy along with VanHarn earned All-America status with their top eight finish.
Kalamazoo's Colleen Orwin capped her senior season with an All-America effort in the 400 IM, finishing eighth in the championship final in 4:33.95 after placing eighth in the morning qualifying with a time of 4:24.58.
Calvin diver Sarah Bradley moved up in the 3-meter final March 15, finishing 10th overall with her score of 430.60 in the consolation final.
Calvin touched 10th both in the prelims and the final of the 200 Free Relay, as freshmen Emily Gunderson and Anna Kutschke along with juniors Rachel Mattson and VanHarn touched in 1:34.14 in the consolation final.
