MIAA Women's Soccer Week #7 Wrap-Up

MIAA Women's Soccer Week #7 Wrap-Up

The margin of error continued to slim as teams jostled for position in MIAA standings with two conference dates last week. With a pair of 2-0 weeks as well as key upsets, the race for the top four seeds for conference postseason play stayed wide open:

• Albion started their 2-0 week against MIAA challengers with a 3-0 shutout victory over Calvin Oct. 12. Riley Burnette (Fr., F, Livonia, Mich.) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 38th minute and added an insurance goal in the 85th while Emily Wolford (Fr., M, Berkley, Mich.) connected for two assists. Megan Bricely (So, GK, Troy, Mich.) tallied two saves in the shutout as the Albion back line held Calvin to just two shots on goal. Then, in a key victory over second-place Hope Oct. 15, Burnette again shook the nets for the game-winner, this time in the 66th minute; the Brits fended off 19 Hope shots to preserve the shutout.

• Alma vaulted up to third place in the MIAA ledger with a 2-0 week, improving their conference unbeaten streak to seven matches. The Scots had to wait one day to take on Adrian Oct. 13 due to weather, but Alma was up to the task with a 3-0 victory. Three different players scored while Macayla Greiner (Sr., M, Hart, Mich.) registered two assists. The Scots then turned quickly and battled back-and-forth with Olivet Oct. 15, finally outlasting the Comets 4-3 in double overtime. Megan Kalanik (Sr., M, Milford, Mich.) scored twice in the first half while Kaylynne Perian (Jr., D, Livonia, Mich.) came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 109th minute.

• Calvin recovered from their mid-week loss to Albion Oct. 12 with a 2-0 home victory over league-leading Kalamazoo Oct. 15. The Knights out-shot the Hornets 14-10 and were bolstered by goals from Emily VanVeldhuisen (Jr., M, Brookville, Md.) and Brianna Russell (Sr., F, Plainwell, Mich.). It was Kalamazoo's first loss since Sept. 8 and just their second shutout of the season.

• Kalamazoo posted their 400th program win with their 8-0 win over Saint Mary's Oct. 12 as three players scored two goals in the contest; Madison Moote (Jr., F, Rochester Hills, Mich.) finished with two goals and two assists.

• Hope outlasted Trine Oct. 12, 4-3, to stay within five points of league-leading Kalamazoo. Elizabeth Perkins (Sr., F, Eaton Rapids, Mich.) answered two early goals by Trine with a pair of first-half strikes to knot the game at 2-2 at the break. Despite a lightning delay in the second half, Perkins kept her scoring prowess and converted in the 87th minute for the game-winner and her third score of the evening.
