Hope Women's Soccer Shuts Out Calvin, Settles For Tie

Another 110 minutes of play, but still no goals in the Hope College-Calvin College women's soccer rivalry this season.

Two stingy defenses combined for the second scoreless draw of the season on Monday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The 48th Hope-Calvin match had just the third 0-0 final score in the 26 years the Flying Dutch and Knights have been playing. They also tied 0-0 after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime on October 3 at Calvin.

"I think both teams had opportunities. The game could have gone either way," Hope coach Leigh Sears said. "Their goalkeeper is phenomenal. We had an amazing shot (in the second overtime). I don't think another keeper in the conference could have made that save."

Calvin's Holly Ellerbroek deflected away a shot from junior Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS) 1 minute, 22 seconds into the second overtime.

Ellerbroek finished with four saves for the Knights' 12th shutout of the season.

Hope recorded its 12th shutout of the season with three saves from sophomore Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett HS).

Calvin coach Mark Recker said both teams deserve credit for their determination on the field.

"There have been opportunities for both teams to perhaps put one away," Recker said. "Each team has a mental toughness, or will, to not have that happen."

The Flying Dutch are now 15-2-3 overall. They finished second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings with a 12-1-3 league record.

Hope will host third-seeded Kalamazoo (9-8-2, 9-5-2 MIAA) in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Top-seeded Calvin (16-2-2, 14-0-2 MIAA) will host fourth-seeded Olivet (11-5-3, 8-5-3 MIAA) on Thursday at 3 p.m.
