Cross lifts Albion past Trine

ALBION, Mich. – The final line reads Albion defeated Trine, 2-0, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's soccer contest Wednesday afternoon.

The score could have been more lopsided had Albion finished its scoring chances early. Domenique Sarnecky had a pair of shots in the first 2 ½ minutes, sending one over the goal and having the other stopped by Trine goalkeeper Kristina Veljovic.

"If we took our chances earlier in the game then the game isn't as tight as it is," Albion Coach Eric Scotrt said after his team improved to 8-8 overall and 6-7 against MIAA rivals. "I think we did a good job of weathering a storm in the middle of the second half."

Sarnecky eventually broke through for her 11th goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Lauren Cross, who assisted on Sarnecky's first half goal, produced her first goal of the season, in the second half.

Albion goalkeeper Maggie Troost was credited with four saves in gaining her sixth shutout of the season.

"You get into a trap where you press higher and leave space behind the back line. With Skyler Reed, their forward, they know how to get behind the back line," Scott said.

Albion has nearly a week off before its Oct. 27 home game against Olivet. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
