Hope Women's Soccer Defeats Trine 2-0 For 12th Win Of Season

Forward Rachael Braginton continued her climb up the single-season goalscoring leaders in Hope College women's soccer history on Tuesday.

The freshman from Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS), scored twice to lead the Flying Dutch to a 2-0 win against Trine at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Braginton now has nine goals this season. She needs one more goal to become the ninth Hope player to record double-digit goals in a single season.

The feat has been accomplished a total of 15 times, including three times apiece by Tracy Phelps and Dawn Gillam. The school record of 19 goals belongs to Melody Morscheck (1997).

Hope won for the second time in a row while improving to 12-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

The Flying Dutch jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead.

Braginton snapped a scoreless tie 29 minutes, 13 seconds into the match. She buried a shot after it deflected the box. Freshman Murphy Stadelmaier of Midland, Michigan (H.H. Dow HS), recorded her first assist.

Braginton struck again five minutes later, heading in a cross from freshman Eliza Beird of Holland, Michigan (Black River HS). It was Beird's fourth assist this season.

Hope outshot Trine (1-11-1, 0-10-1 MIAA) by a 23-2 margin.

The shutout was the Flying Dutch's ninth this season. Sophomore Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett HS), is fourth all-time in Hope single-season history with nine shutouts.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they host Albion. Kickoff is 7 p.m. for the Van Andel Institute Purple Games fundraiser at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
