Six MIAA Wrestlers Punch Their Ticket to the 2023 NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Six wrestlers from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) will compete in the 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships which are slated for March 10-11.

A total of 180 participants will compete in the championships after qualifying at the NCAA regional tournaments.

Adrian College will have four representatives at the national competition:  Graduate student Zach Altman at 165, graduate student Derick Duvall at 174, sophomore Blake Williams at 184, and senior Dylan Wellbaum at 197.  Altman, Duvall, and Wellbaum all placed second at the 2023 NCAA Regional, while Williams earned a third-place finish.  The Bulldogs are led by 2023 Division III Central Region Coach of the Year, Bill Schindel.  Wellbaum became a two-time All-MIAA honoree this season and Williams received all-conference recognition for the first time in his career.

Freshman Cade Odrobina of Albion College will compete as part of the 125 weight-class bracket.  Odrobina placed third at the regional competition.  He is the second-ever national qualifier for the Brits who are currently in their second season.

Olivet junior Donovan King will represent the Comets in the heavyweight competition.  King was the runner-up in the 285-pound bracket, falling only to the second-ranked wrestler in the nation.  Prior to the regional tournament, King was voted the 2023 MIAA Most Valuable Wrestler after going undefeated in league competition and tallying two victories at the MIAA Individual Championships.

The complete seeded bracket will be available Monday, March 6.  The championships will be hosted at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
