Wrestling Programs Compete in 2022 MIAA Individual Championships

FREELAND, Mich. -- On Sunday, January 30, four wrestling programs from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competed in the MIAA Individual Championships, hosted at Olivet College.

Olivet earned six individual championships, while Adrian College and Albion College each tallied two individual titles.

At 125 pounds, Albion's Ben Kamali picked up the win.  After defeating Trine University's Joseph Garcia by a 23-8 technical fall, Kamali secured the 125 title with a 3:59 pin against Adrian's Zach Phifer.

Dylan Phelps of Olivet claimed the 133 pound title.  With a bye in the first round, Phelps won by a 5-3 decision against Trine's Jett Boots.

Olivet's Reese Wallis earned the championship at 141 pounds.  A pin in 1:48 gave Wallis the win against Trine's Amir Crockett, followed by a 7-0 victory over Adrian's Sam Ross in the next round.  Wallis automatically recorded a win in the championship round due to injury of his opponent.

At 149 pounds, Adrian's Landyn VanWyk recorded the individual championship victory.  VanWyk pinned Olivet's David Schulte in 2:48 before an automatic advancement due to injury in the next round.  In the championship matchup, VanWyk edged Christian Lenon of Olivet, 4-3.

Ramiro Guerrero of Olivet won the 157 pound championship.  Following a 21-7 major decision versus Adrian's Michael Pizzo, Guerrero clinched the weight class title with a 12-4 major decision against Trine's Phillip Burney.

Olivet's Dylan Briggs earned the championship title at 165 pounds.  In the first round of competition, Briggs had a pin at 3:22 vs. Adrian's Damani Wallace.  Briggs won by technical fall (15-0) against Adrian's Trenton DiGenova and concluded the day with an 8-3 victory over Adrian's Zach Altman.

Owen Guilford represented Olivet as the 174 pound champion.  Guilford pinned Trine's Jonathan Ibarra in 0:58 before a 16-0 technical fall versus Trine's John Browning.  A 9-0 decision against Trine's Owen Conklin clinched the 174 title for the Comet.

At 184 pounds, Olivet's Justin Carnahan came out on top.  Carnahan pinned Adrian's Mitchell Moore in 2:20 and Bulldog Blake Williams in 2:25.  Carnahan secured the weight-class victory with a 5-3 decision against teammate Hiram Robinson.

Adrian's Dylan Wellbaum earned an individual championship crown at 197 pounds.  Wellbaum opened competition by pinning Olivet's Zakary Foster in 2:12.  A pin at 1:44 versus teammate Preston Calvert advanced Wellbaum to the final, where he had an automatic victory.

Albion's Owen Miller claimed the 285 pound title.  Miller pinned Trine's Andrew Captain in 1:20.  He then notched a 3-2 victory over Olivet's Dominick Wilson and had an automatic win in the final matchup.

The wrestling programs will compete in their final MIAA dual meets of the season on Sunday, February 6, at Trine University.
