2021 MIAA Wrestling Individual Championships Recap; All-MIAA

MIAA Individual Championships Results

OLIVET, Mich. -- The 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Wrestling Individual Championships were held at Olivet College's Cutler Event Center on Saturday, January 30th.

Olivet notched seven individual championships at the event, while Adrian tallied two championship titles and Alma earned one.  Olivet's 11 total finalists and seven champions were the most for a single MIAA institution.

At 125 pounds, Olivet senior and two-time All-MIAA wrestler Cameron Mahlich had an 18-1 technical fall vs. Alma junior Zachariah Kelley and a pin at 0:42 against Adrian freshman Robert Andrews in pool play.  Mahlich earned a 3-1 decision against Alma senior Chase Beecher to claim the 125 championship title.

At 133 pounds, OC junior and three-time All-MIAA wrestler Reese Wallis had technical falls against Alma sophomore Will Kidder (17-0) and Alma junior Carter Hankins (16-1), and a 12-0 major decision vs. Trine freshman Joseph Langeman during round-robin play.  In a close championship match, Wallis edged Alma senior Austin Wieczorek, 6-4, with a takedown in the final second of the third period, followed by another takedown in the last second of OT for the championship.

Olivet freshman Dylan Phelps had an 18-3 technical fall versus Alma freshman Steven Davidson and a 12-4 major decision against Adrian freshman La'Ron Ruffin in his 141-pounds round-robin pool.  In the final round, Phelps claimed the 141 title with a 9-5 decision against Alma sophomore Matt Tomsett.

At 149 pounds, Olivet sophomore Hunter Murphy picked up a 17-1 technical-fall victory over Adrian freshman Jacob Colbart, a 36-second pin vs. Alma senior Zachary Jandereski, and a 17-4 major decision versus Trine freshman Isaac Hawkins in pool play.  Murphy earned the championship crown against Adrian senior Noah Nieman with a pin (1:23).

Alma junior Jayce Kuehnlein had three pins in his round robin pool at 157 versus Olivet junior Channing Perry (0:55), Adrian freshman Trent Rector (2:01), and Trine freshman Ethan Nash (2:08).  In the championship bout, Kuehnlein had a 15-0 technical fall against Olivet freshman Gabe Guerrero.

At 165 pounds, Adrian junior and two-time All-MIAA wrestler Derick Duvall began his round robin competition with a pin (5:00) against Olivet freshman Mitchell Reynolds, followed by a pair of technical falls versus Trine senior Efrain Amezquita (18-2) and Alma junior Alexander Henry (16-1).  In the championship round, Duvall had an 8-6 decision against Trine junior Owen Conklin.

Olivet sophomore Owen Guilford was awarded the default championship at 174 pounds.  Guilford and teammate Zach Wells both had 3-0 records after round-robin competition.  Guilford had a 3:52 pin against Alma senior Erik Arnegard, an 8-2 decision versus Adrian senior Bryant Moore, and a 14-1 major decision vs. Trine freshman Mason Custer.  Wells' wins included a 22-12 major decision against Alma senior Joe Vondrasek, an 8-1 decision vs. Adrian junior Zach Altman, and a pin (1:57) versus Trine's Mason Custer.

At 184 pounds, Adrian senior Michael Jacobs posted wins against teammate Derrick Top with a pin (3:00) and Olivet freshman Justin Carnahan with a 9-3 decision.  In the championship bout, Jacobs secured the 184 title with a 4-1 decision against Olivet senior Adam Hall.

Olivet senior Trevor Piggott won his 197 round-robin matches with a pin at 2:43 versus Trine's Ryan Mahoney, and major decisions against Adrian's Braden Damiani (10-2) and Alma's Dillon Stevenson (14-4).  In the championship matchup, Piggott earned a 2-0 decision against Adrian senior Donald Moses.

At 285 pounds, Olivet sophomore Dominick Wilson was awarded the default championship.  Wilson and teammate Donovan King both had 3-0 records in pool play.  Wilson notched a 2-0 victory over nationally-ranked Isaiah Espinoza from Adrian.  He also posted a 4-0 win against Alma senior Charlie Prescott and had a pin at 1:32 vs. Trine freshman Andrew Captain.  King recorded pins versus Trine senior Jacob Garrett (0:42), Adrian freshman Mason Slocum (0:15), and Trine freshman Jacob Jackson (3:43).

The winner in each weight class at the MIAA Individual Championships earned all-conference, as listed below.  The 2021 Most Valuable Wrestler will be voted on following the MIAA Dual Meet Championship.

The 2021 MIAA Dual Meet Championship will be held at Alma College on Saturday, February 13th.
