Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian went 1-2 at the Kalahari Resorts duals by defeating host Heidelberg University, 24-21, losing to No. 6-ranked Mount Union by a 42-3 score and falling to No. 7 Baldwin Wallace in a match that was closer than the 30-12 final appeared… Against the Purple Raiders to open the day, junior Devon Pingel picked up Adrian's only points with a 6-3 decision against Landon Talbert at 197 pounds…Pingel is nationally ranked No. 6 in the latest D3wrestle.com poll and No. 7 by the ranked No. 6 by National Wrestling Coaches' Association… Adrian spotted Heidelberg a 9-0 lead before mounting a comeback that saw it take five of the eight next bouts for the three-point win… Sophomore Isaiah Espinoza clinched the win with a 6-0 decision over Blake Jerome at 285, as Adrian also trailed 15-9 before tying the match against the Student Princes at 21-all to set the stage for Espinoza’s decisive bout…versus the BW Yellow Jackets, Dylan Wellbaum (174) and Espinoza earned pins to account for the Bulldogs points; in the other eight bouts, four were decided by decision--all wins for BW--for seven points combined… Adrian sees its win streak snapped at six matches by does pick up its ninth win of the season (against four dual losses) to set a modern-day program benchmark. (The 2018-19 squad finished with an 8-3 record.)… Adrian will begin the new year on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Waynesburg Invitational.


Alma

Did not compete. The Scots are back in action Dec. 19 at the Mount St. Joseph tri-meet.


No. 25 Olivet

The #25-ranked Olivet wrestling team posted a 1-2 record at the Kalahari Duals in Sandusky, Ohio. The Comets slipped past University of Wis.-Oshkosh, 22-21, before falling to No. 7-ranked Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University, 21-13, and No. 6-ranked University of Mount Union (Ohio), 28-18. Against Oshkosh, sophomore Owen Miller scored a takedown in overtime for a 3-1 win and provide the winning team points. The teams split the 10 bouts, with a 9-1 major decision by junior Cole Hersch at 157 pounds being the difference in the match. Other bonus point wins were pins by senior Drew Mandell at 149 pounds and senior Kamyab Kamali at 184 pounds. Despite the loss to BW, the score was a lot closer than the result. Eight of the matches were minor decisions, and six of the eight were decided by two points or less. Winning for Olivet were sophomore Reese Wallis (4-2 at 133 pounds), Mandell (12-4 at 149 pounds), freshman Owen Guilford (2-0 at 174 pounds) and Dominick Wilson (2-0 at 285 pounds). Against Mount Union, Olivet won four bouts -- junior Cameron Mahlich (4-3 at 125 pounds), Mandell (10-8 at 149 pounds), junior Trevor Piggott (pin at 197 pounds) and Wilson (pin at 285 pounds).


Trine
