Around the MIAA

Adrian

Cole Wiegers was named the MIAA Wrestler of the Week on Monday, becoming the first freshman and fifth overall in the history of the Adrian College men's program; Wiegers earned the honor after a pin in Adrian's victory over Trine last week. According to the latest d3wrestle.com rankings, Isaiah Espinoza is ranked fourth at heavyweight and Devon Pingel is ranked fifth at 197 while Noah Nieman is an honorable mention wrestler at the 149 weight class. 


Alma

The wrestling team came up short 24-13 against Olivet Jan. 23. Senior Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich.) had a terrific match against Drew Mandell that went the distance; Cooper came out on top 22-17. Senior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich.) also earned a win, 6-2, with riding time of over six minutes.


No. 16 Olivet

Olivet captured the 2020 MIAA championship with a 24-13 win over Alma Jan. 23 at the Upton Center Gymnasium. The Comets have now won three straight MIAA titles (1984, 2019, 2020) and 12 overall in school history. Junior Cameron Mahlich got the match started against Alma with a thrilling 7-1 overtime decision at 125 pounds. Sophomore Reese Wallis won a 16-1 technical fall at 133 pounds. Other wins for Olivet were by senior Cole Hersch (12-6 at 157 pounds), senior Haydn Kinjorski (9-5 at 184 pounds), junior Trevor Piggott (12-3 at 197 pounds) and sophomore Dominick Wilson (forfeit at 285 pounds).


Trine

Lost to Adrian, 37-9, to end MIAA dual meet competition...Luke Carver earned three team points with a 3-1 decision by sudden victory at 184 pounds and Chase Gibson captured the remaining team points with a pin in a time of 4:47 in a 197-pound matchup.
