Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian gave nationally-ranked and conference champion Olivet all it could handle in a 23-12 loss Friday to the Comets in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association finale for both schools at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. Olivet, which is ranked 15th in NCAA Division III, improves to 12-3 overall and wins the MIAA championship with a 3-0 league mark. The Bulldogs fall to 7-3 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Alma

Due to inclement weather, Alma did not compete. The Scots will conclude the 2019 MIAA season Thursday, Feb. 7 against Trine.

No. 15 Olivet

The Comets secured the 2019 MIAA title with a 23-12 win over Adrian Feb. 1. The Comets won six of 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in three of the wins. Freshman 133-pounder Reese Wallis scored an escape and takedown in the third period to pull away for an 8-3 decision. Sophomore 141-pounder Andrew Castaneda received a penalty point late in the third period and scored a takedown for a 7-5 win. Junior 149-pounder Cole Hersch had a takedown and four-point near-fall in the first period, and never looked back in an 11-0 major decision win. Senior 165-pounder Tyler Grimsley used a quick move to pin his opponent 14 seconds into the second period. Junior 174-pounder Haydn Kinjorski tallied a 14-6 major decision victory. Senior 197-pounder Jacob Harvey posted a 3-1 decision, with the difference in the bout being a penalty point late in the bout and the riding time point. Olivet has now won 11 of the 17 MIAA wrestling championships.

Trine

Only event this past week was rescheduled due to weather. The Thunder will face Alma Thursday, Feb. 7 in the MIAA season finale.
