Around the MIAA

Adrian

Sophomore Noah Nieman (149 pounds) is the reigning MIAA Wrestler of the Week, becoming the second Bulldog this season to garner the conference’s weekly honor…classmate Devon Pingel also won MIAA Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 21 and Dec. 10…Nieman was the runner-up in the 149-pound weight class at the prestigious Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational over the weekend…Nieman defeated three D3wrestle.com Top-25 wrestlers along the way and lost to No. 14 Luke Hernandez of Mount Union in a 4-minute, 9-second fall in the championship while going 4-1 at the event…the Invitational is the second oldest college wrestling event in the nation behind the NCAA Championships…the Bulldogs placed 19th (41.5 points) in the 38-school field…Pingel leads Adrian with a 26-5 record at 184…senior Dominic Paterra has a career-best 18 victories (18-14)… Robert Nowik tops AC freshmen with 17 wins (17-13)…Nieman is second on the team with 20 wins (20-14)…Adrian hosts MIAA rival and nationally-ranked Olivet in the home finale on Thursday…the Bulldogs are 7-2 in dual-meets.


Alma

Alma went to Wheaton for the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational this past weekend. The Scots finished 22nd out of 38 schools in the two-day tournament. Junior Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich.) pinned the third-ranked wrestler in the nation in the 149-pound weight class to take third place. Six Scots in total earned at least one win at the invite.


No. 15 Olivet

The Comets finished in sixth place (out of 38 schools) at the Wheaton College/Pete Willson Invitational. The Comets totaled 80.5 points and had five wrestlers finish in the top eight of their respective weight class. Junior Haydn Kinjorski was Olivet's top finisher, with a 6-2 record to place fourth in the 174-pound bracket. Three of Kinjorski's wins were pins. Three wrestlers – junior Drew Mandell at 149 pounds, senior Tyler Grimsley at 165 pounds, and sophomore Trevor Piggott at 285 pounds – finished sixth. Mandell had three pins, including one in 20 seconds. Junior Cole Hersch was seventh at 157 pounds.


Trine

Trine placed 23rd out of 38 teams at the annual Wheaton Pete Willson Invitational. Luke Carver placed fifth in the 184-pound weight class with a 4-2 record and became the first Thunder wrestler to place at the event. Carver recorded one pin on the day against Ohio Northern University's Cash Thompson in a time of 3:52.
